Tax Manager, Financial Compliance, Accounting & Finance
X&BM is the business-management arm of X& and the highest-frequency relationship in the house. Its clients are entertainers, athletes, founders, and cultural figures whose financial lives span multiple entities, income streams, jurisdictions, and advisors. X&BM runs their entire financial operation: accounting, bill pay, cash management, payroll, royalty administration, insurance, and tax. Every engagement runs on Sanbo, which means the team spends its time on judgment and client relationships rather than on data entry and reconciliation.
X&BM is the first AI-native business-management firm, built to deliver a level of accuracy, speed, and discretion that a traditional firm cannot match.
The Tax Director leads the tax practice at X&BM. This is a full-time, on-site role in Los Angeles, reporting to the head of X&BM and working directly with the firm's client-facing partners.
The Tax Director owns every tax outcome for X&BM's clients and for X&BM's own entities. That means:
- Client tax strategy and planning. Designing and maintaining tax-efficient structures for clients with complex income: loan-out corporations, S corporations, partnerships, trusts, royalty and licensing income, endorsement and touring income, equity compensation, and investment holdings. Modeling the tax consequences of major decisions before the client makes them: a new entity, a deal, a relocation, a sale.
- Compliance and preparation. Overseeing the preparation and review of individual, corporate, partnership, trust, and multi-state filings for every client. Managing estimated payments, extensions, and elections on a calendar that never slips. Multi-state and international work is a core part of the job: nonresident state filings for athletes and touring artists, foreign withholding and treaty positions, and clients with income or residence in Japan and other jurisdictions.
- Audits and authorities. Leading all correspondence with the IRS, the FTB, and other state and international tax authorities. Running audits and notices from first letter to resolution.
- External advisors. Managing the outside CPAs, tax attorneys, and international specialists engaged on client matters, and deciding what stays in-house.
- The firm's own tax. Overseeing tax compliance and planning for X&BM's entities and coordinating with X& Financial on group-level matters.
- Building the practice on Sanbo. X&BM's tax workflow is built into Sanbo, not bolted onto it. The Tax Director defines how tax data is captured, reviewed, and controlled inside the platform, sets the review standards the system enforces, and works with the Sanbo product team to turn repeatable tax work into automated work. This is a build role as much as a review role.
- Controls and guidance. Establishing internal controls over tax data and filings, and guiding the accounting and client-service teams on tax matters that touch their day-to-day work.
- Regulatory watch. Monitoring changes in federal, state, and international tax law, assessing the impact on the client base, and advising clients and X&BM leadership on risk and opportunity.
The clients trust X&BM with everything. The Tax Director is the person that trust rests on for tax.
Qualifications- Deep expertise in tax and tax law, with the ability to interpret and apply complex rules to individuals, closely held corporations, partnerships, trusts, and cross-border situations.
- A track record in tax compliance and preparation, including oversight of filings, audits, and correspondence with federal and state tax authorities.
- Direct experience serving entertainment, sports, or high-net-worth clients, or working inside a business-management firm. Familiarity with loan-out structures, royalty income, multi-state athlete and touring taxation, and equity compensation is expected.
- A solid foundation in accounting, with the ability to work with the firm's accounting team on reporting, provisions, and controls.
- CPA required. JD or LL.M. in taxation is a strong plus.
- Ten or more years in tax, including several years leading a team or a practice.
- Exposure to international tax, and to Japan in particular, is highly valued.
- Comfort building in software. The Tax Director will shape how tax work runs inside an AI-native platform, and should want to.
- Proven leadership: managing engagements, influencing partners and clients, and building processes that scale beyond the person who built them.
- Precision, discretion, and the highest ethical standards. X&BM's clients are public figures, and…
