Senior System Safety Engineer – El Segundo, CA / Goleta, CA

At RTX, the world’s largest aerospace and defense company, our System Safety team evaluates and mitigates safety risks that our products may pose to the world, specifically to people, hardware, and the environment. By applying rigorous engineering and management principles, we ensure that safety is optimized throughout every phase of the system lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Developing and implementing one or more MIL‑STD‑882E compliant system safety programs.
  • Performing MIL‑STD‑882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses, or the customer’s approved equivalent.
  • Coordinating with customer safety representatives, applying methods, standards, and techniques to clarify system requirements to software, hardware, and test personnel to ensure design and architecture considerations are allocated appropriately and horizontally integrated across the development teams.
  • Coordinating with customer safety representatives to gain safety approval from appropriate Safety Review Board authorities.
  • Working across all integrated product teams and lines to properly eliminate hazards or provide effective controls.
  • Collaborating with Program Management and government approval authorities from program startup through production to demilitarization and disposal.
  • Performing system safety planning, hazard analyses, and design analyses.
  • Briefing safety considerations at technical reviews and as part of the safety approval process.
  • Interpreting system requirements, customer specifications and military standards.
  • Preparing internal and customer reports describing various analyses relevant to the System Safety program.
  • Collaborating across multiple disciplines to gain a full understanding of product architecture and design.
  • Interfacing with other engineering functions:
    Systems Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hardware Engineering.
  • Managing System Safety Working Group(s) between key Raytheon and Customer representatives.
  • Ability to work on Special Access Program(s).
Qualifications
  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). Minimum 5 years of relevant prior experience.
  • Experience with System & Software Safety Engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing and implementing MIL‑STD‑882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses, involving management (task series 100), analysis (task series 200), evaluation (task series 300), and verification (task series 400).
  • Experience with DoD System Safety Programs (MIL‑STD‑882 / DO‑178).
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Experience with system and software safety implementation in Agile Development environments.
  • Experience solving complex problems by leveraging available resources and research material.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and Proposal Development.
  • Experience interfacing with Human Systems Integration showcasing execution of Human Factors Engineering tasking involving MIL‑STD‑1472.
  • Experience with Engineering Change Proposals, Engineering Review Boards, and System Safety Working Groups.
  • 3 years’ experience with a master’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).
Security Clearance Requirements

Active and transferrable final U.S. government‑issued Secret security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Salary range: $95,500 – $181,700 per year (based on experience).
