Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation.
The expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems. The Materials Science Department within the Space Materials Laboratory is seeking a well-qualified individual for the role of Research Associate - Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). In this hands-on laboratory role, you will execute advanced Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques on mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components, supporting senior technical staff in technique development and validation.
You will contribute to mission assurance through hands-on inspections, data collection and analysis, and maintenance of laboratory NDI systems.
This role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in state-of-the-art NDI methods and materials characterization while supporting programs for USSF, NRO, and commercial space agencies. Highlights of our lab's capabilities can be seen here:
Virtual Tour This position may be filled at the Research Associate II or Research Associate III depending on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility in El Segundo, CA. What You'll Be Doing
* Perform non-destructive inspections on mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components using ultrasonic testing, eddy current, acoustic microscopy, thermography, and other advanced inspection techniques
* Operate and maintain NDI instrumentation including ultrasonic systems, eddy current equipment, acoustic microscopes, thermography systems, and associated test and measurement electronics
* Collect, analyze, and document inspection data to support applied research activities in materials characterization and NDI science
* Contribute to mission assurance by conducting inspections, analyzing measurement data, and preparing technical reports for USSF, NRO, and commercial space programs
* Maintain laboratory organization, equipment calibration records, and inventory management to ensure operational readiness and compliance with quality standards
* Collaborate with senior technical staff and cross-functional teams to support field evaluations, failure investigations, and technical assessments
* Develop proficiency in multiple NDI modalities through hands-on training and mentorship from senior technical staff What Corporate Skills You 'll Bring
