Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
The Materials Science Department within the Space Materials Laboratory is seeking a well-qualified individual for the role of Materials Physicist – Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). In this role, you will work alongside senior technical staff to develop and apply advanced non-destructive inspection (NDI) techniques for mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components. You will support mission assurance through data analysis and technical reviews, while conducting applied research to address emerging materials characterization challenges for next-generation aerospace systems.
This role offers the opportunity to expand your NDI expertise across multiple modalities while collaborating with USSF, NRO, and commercial space programs.
The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility in El Segundo, CA.
What You'll Be Doing- Support the development and validation of advanced NDI techniques for mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components, including methods based on radiography, ultrasonics, eddy current, thermography, and other inspection modalities
- Conduct applied research in materials characterization and NDI science to solve emerging inspection challenges and enable next-generation aerospace systems
- Support mission assurance through analysis of inspection data, manufacturing documentation, and technical assessments for USSF, NRO, and commercial space programs
- Perform hands-on inspection of flight hardware and conduct field evaluations at manufacturing and launch sites
- Contribute to laboratory testing, failure investigations, and technical reviews to ensure structural integrity and mission success
- Develop expertise in new NDI modalities through mentorship and hands-on training with senior technical staff
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical information to diverse audiences
- Must work well in a team environment and be receptive to mentorship and guidance from senior staff
- Possess organizational, time management and project management skills
- Demonstrate flexibility and ability to adapt to changing organizational needs
- Interpersonal skills to coordinate efforts and work with other internal and external organizations
Minimum Requirements:
- Masters degree from an accredited college/university program in Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline (pursuing or conferred within last 12 months)
- 0-1 year industry experience
- Strong foundation in aerospace materials science, structural mechanics, and the physical principles underlying non-destructive inspection techniques
