Position SummaryThe 5-Axis CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating 5-axis CNC milling machines and machining centers to produce precision components from billet, castings, and forgings. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities- Communicate effectively with team members and leadership both verbally and in writing.
- Collaborate closely with machinists, engineers, inspectors, and production staff to support manufacturing goals.
- Read and interpret:
- Work instructions
- Blueprints and technical drawings
- GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
- Sketches, manuals, and specifications
- Apply knowledge of:
- Speed and feed calculations
- Basic trigonometry
- G-codes and M-codes
- Tool geometry and perishable tooling
- Determine dimensions, tolerances, machining sequences, and setup requirements for each job.
- Measure, mark, and scribe reference points on materials and work pieces for machining guidance.
- Select, align, and secure:
- Workholding fixtures
- Cutting tools
- Machine attachments and accessories
- Raw materials
- Set machining parameters including speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut.
- Retrieve, input, edit, and adjust CNC programs as needed.
- Monitor machine operations to detect:
- Malfunctions
- Tool wear
- Out-of-tolerance conditions
- Adjust machine controls as necessary to maintain quality standards.
- Verify finished parts meet engineering specifications and tolerances.
- Perform trial runs to validate machine setups and programmed control data.
- Collaborate with Department Leaders, Manufacturing Engineers, Supervisors, Inspectors, Planners, and Programmers to troubleshoot machining challenges.
- Complete required production documentation including:
- Shop travelers
- Machine logs
- In-process inspection sheets
- Planning change requests
- Maintain strict adherence to company policies and safety standards.
- 5–10 years of related machining experience and/or formal training
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Proficiency operating a wide range of machine shop equipment, including:
- CNC Mills
- Lathes
- Grinders
- Saws
- CMM machines
- Deburring equipment
- Experience using precision inspection and measurement tools, including:
- Micrometers and calipers
- Optical comparators
- Profilometers
- Various metrology equipment
- Ability to lift 20–50 lbs regularly or utilize overhead cranes when required
- Must be able to read and write in English
