Overview

The County of San Diego is recruiting for the position of Sheriff's Detentions Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN).

Eligible for appointment at step 5: $70,241.60 annually (Step 5 per Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5).

Future salary increases:
June 2026 – 5.20% (3.50% Across‑Board + 1.70% Market Adjustment);
June 2027 – 4.70% (3.00% Across‑Board + 1.70% Market Adjustment).

• Shift differentials: $0.80/hr for evening shift, $0.80/hr for graveyard shift.
• 10% institutional work location premium.

Sheriff's Detentions LVNs provide nursing care to patients in San Diego County detention facilities. Duties include assisting in clinics, caring for individuals with medical or psychiatric conditions, and responding to emergencies. Tasks performed may include but are not limited to preparation and administration of medications, venipuncture, performing simple lab tests, and wound care.

• Experience in correctional, psychiatric, geriatric, cardiac care, and emergency settings.
• Certifications in CCHP, blood withdrawal, and/or IV therapy.
• Effective communication, customer‐focused, respectful, ethical, team player, and supportive of change.

• Locked detention facility; exposure to infectious illnesses and unpredictable inmate behavior.
• Rotating shifts (morning, midday, night), holidays, and weekends.
• Require ability to lift up to 15 lbs. and occasionally 50 lbs.

• Thorough background investigation including fingerprinting, psychological, polygraph, or other tests.
• Felony convictions are disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency.
• Candidates will be placed on a six‑month employment list based on evaluation scores.

• Interviews conducted shortly thereafter; available on a first‑come, first‑served basis.
• Background process begins post‑interview.
• Pre‑employment medical screening approximately 3 weeks after successful background results.
• Start date based on completion of medical screening or mutually agreed date.
