Industrial Electrician Supervisor
Class Code:
Title: Industrial Electrician Supervisor
Grade: S-24
Definition: Under general direction, serves as a first line supervisor, planning and managing a group of industrial electricians in the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of high voltage industrial electrical systems, controls and equipment for a large 24/7 wastewater treatment plant, pumping stations, flare stations, waste transfer stations, flow metering stations and other electrical equipment throughout the county; and performs related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This class serves as a first level supervisor and requires a Master Electrician's License.
Illustrative Duties- Supervises and consults on troubleshooting complex high voltage industrial equipment, control and power system failures to determine the cause and corrective action required;
- Supervises and consults on major complex installations and repair projects;
- Monitors and evaluates work productivity, equipment operating and energy efficiency using computerized maintenance management system, Variable Frequency Drives, Programmable Logic Controllers and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems;
- Has oversight of vendors and contractors and serves as their technical point of contact;
- Performs inspections of plant equipment to ensure safety, reliability and code compliance of work being performed; assists in the writing of specifications for the ordering of electrical equipment and contract services;
- Ensures work performed complies with regulatory requirements;
- Supervises subordinate employees including coaching, counseling, training and evaluations;
- Monitors the National Electrical Code and other changes in the electrical and electronic industries and identifies appropriate training for subordinates;
- Plans and coordinates work with operations and other trades to ensure minimal disruptions;
- Monitors all processes, procedures and costs to detect variances and trends to anticipate future needs;
- Ensures all subordinates have safety training and are in compliance at all times;
- Ensures inventory of repair and replacement parts and supplies to minimize downtime of equipment;
- Effectively communicates with customers, employees and managers;
- Reinforces a safety culture and continually seeks to expand safety knowledge through training, mentoring, self-study or other methods of continuous learning;
- Investigates, documents and reports safety issues;
- Clearly communicates safety expectations;
- Resolves safety-related matters in a timely manner;
- Complies with the safety competencies.
Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of the standard practices, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade;
- Extensive knowledge of applicable county, state and national electrical, NFPA and safety codes;
- Extensive knowledge of electrical controls and motors, including high voltage three phase service;
- Thorough knowledge of maintenance management systems;
- General knowledge of wastewater code compliance and regulatory requirements;
- Extensive knowledge of computers, Variable Frequency Drives, Programmable Logic Controllers, Computerized Maintenance Management and/or Enterprise Management Systems and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems diagnostic measures;
- Thorough knowledge of supply and policy and procedures;
- Thorough knowledge of safety regulations and procedures as well as common hazards and precautionary methods for working with electricity;
- Ability to distinguish different color wiring;
- Ability to use computers;
- Ability to read and interpret diagrams, schematics, blueprints and manuals;
- Ability to plan the work for, train and supervise subordinates, lower level industrial electricians and employees from other sections;
- Ability to work in confined spaces;
- Ability to comprehend confined space training;
- Ability to comply with safety practices;
- Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors;
- Ability to ensure that subordinates follow all safety regulations and use safe work practices.
Special Requirements
- Employment Standards: Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or a G.E.D.; plus, eight years of experience as an industrial electrician; and one year at the industrial electrician III level or equivalent senior industrial electrician.
- Certificates and Licenses
Required:
A valid driver's license; a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Master Electrician's license; possession of a valid Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Institute Certificate (ARI) and/or Confined Space Certification may be required for certain positions. - Necessary Special Requirements: Pre-employment physical and annual thereafter, a criminal background check and driving record check.
