Job: Instrument Mechanic II

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision the Instrument Mechanic II installs, repairs, maintains, and adjusts indicating, recording, telemetering, and controlling instruments used to measure and control variables such as pressure, flow, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition.

TYPICAL DUTIES:
  • Diagnose and repair complex HVAC control systems malfunctions requiring extensive knowledge of electronic and digital control systems.
  • Inspect, evaluate and determine necessary modifications, perform complex repairs or removal of instruments/devices needing overhaul during scheduled maintenance of HVAC control systems.
  • Disassemble malfunctioning instruments, and test mechanism and circuitry for defects.
  • Troubleshoot equipment in or out of control system and replace or repair defective parts, reassemble instrument and test assembly for conformance with specifications.
  • Record and report abnormal functions or out of tolerance conditions of equipment and initiate corrective action.
  • Provide sketches of field changes for engineering corrections. Assist with job layouts.
  • Develop solutions to complex HVAC system controls issues.
  • Respond to system alarms using computer and onsite analysis.
  • Monitor and inspect heating and cooling systems to ensure continued proper operation.
  • Replace defective HVAC electrical and electronic controls to include communication cables.
  • Monitor energy management control system and building automation systems; respond promptly to alarm conditions and troubleshoot system malfunction in the field.
  • Observe pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to ensure proper operation.
  • Check distribution systems for proper velocity, volume, temperature, pressure, etc.
  • Respond to emergency calls after normal work hours.
  • Follow procedures, regulations and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
  • Provide technical support to HVAC Mechanics, Boiler Tenders, Stationary Engineers, and other departments.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Eight or more years of field experience servicing and repairing HVAC equipment and controls.
  • Ability to write and test modifications in multiple languages of system software.
  • Must possess comprehensive knowledge of computer operated HVAC control systems and principles of air-conditioning, ventilation, fluid flow and heating operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics provided by manufacturers.
  • Advanced knowledge of and understanding of energy management control systems and building automation systems to include pneumatic controls, complex balance procedures, load calculations.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve advanced network operation problems along with strong knowledge of network (WAN or LAN) intranet.
  • Knowledge of computer systems operation and network administration to include CBUS/LON.
  • Able to use industry hand and machine tools.
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and written instructions.
  • Advanced electrical and electronic troubleshooting skills.
