Position Summary

In alignment with the U-46 Equity Plan, provide student support and guidance in learning through academic, post-secondary, and social emotional development. The counselors ensure that all students have access to rigorous courses, multiple opportunities for college and career exploration, and provide resources to support student success and wellness in the development of the whole child.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Implement the U-46 Counseling Framework.
  • Establish a comprehensive middle school course plan to support every student and provide a comprehensive roadmap that leads to a challenging high school schedule that advances post-secondary opportunities.
  • Actively participate in new student registration, orientation sessions for students and families, including but not limited to elementary and high school transition meetings. These sessions/meetings may include evening events.
  • Meet with or make contact with every student in assigned caseload, a minimum of three times annually, not including middle school course selection.
  • Serve as case manager for students with 504 plans. Responsibilities include, but are not exhaustive, developing, updating, and communicating information and resources to support the plan annually.
  • Assist students with high school, magnet academy, gifted, and related materials, including, but not limited to, application process, scholarships, letters of recommendation, etc.
  • Facilitate information sessions for students and families regarding student course selection, testing, college and career exploration, scholarships, and high school/post-graduate education.
  • Lead, facilitate and/or support college and career exploration events (on-site and off-site) that include middle school students.
  • Collaborate with community partners to provide additional support and resources to identified students and families.
  • Provide stakeholders with information including school profile, parent and family newsletter, scholarship post-secondary opportunities, and a departmental calendar summarizing activities and events throughout the year.
  • In collaboration with other team members, monitor academic, attendance, and discipline data of the students for additional support in their academic and social emotional success.
  • Work with student advocates to ensure mentoring and support services result in academic and social emotional progress.
  • Participate on student support teams (Service Teams, MTSSTierTeams, etc.) to problem solve, develop, and implement interventions and supports to assist students.
  • Oversee the administration and interpretation of standardized tests and school-wide surveys (5 Essentials, Panorama, etc.) use the data to provide additional support for students' academic, social emotional, and post-secondary success.
  • Provide direct support services to students individually, in small groups, and/or classrooms, which includes an effective referral and follow-up process for students' academic, social emotional, and post-secondary well-being.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping and reporting (attendance, 504, IC, PLP, etc.) as requested/required by law or district policy.
  • Work collaboratively with counselors, social workers, teachers, administrators, and other support staff to meet building and district needs.

Education
  • Illinois Professional Educator License with School Counselor endorsement.
  • Master's degree in related subject from an accredited university.
Experience / Knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must exhibit willingness and capacity to use all forms of current technology.
  • Proficient with the use of District software (Naviance and Infinite Campus) preferred.
  • Must demonstrate and follow the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success.
  • Displays a clear understanding of issues and trends in college and career readiness, postsecondary, college admission, higher education, testing, and job placement, as well as remaining current on specific colleges, NCAA requirements, and professional practices etc.
  • School counseling experience (preferred).
Physical Demands
  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push objects or materials up to 30 lbs. with proper technique.
  • Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
Terms of Employment
  • This is a 10-month position (184 work days).
  • Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.
