Function / Position Summary
Elgin U-46 High School Physical Educators are results-driven with experience in, and commitment to
implementing a district standards-based curriculum and use data and assessments to drive instructional
decisions. They are proven managers of classrooms who have established a culture of learning for all students
with the effective implementation of strategies, structure, and high expectations to achieve measurable
academic, physical and social emotional success. They have experience working with English Language
Learners as well as students with special needs and can provide instructional strategies, accommodations
and/or modifications to support the social, emotional and academic success of all students.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Assume personal responsibility for the academic progress of all students
- Uses the Board of Education adopted, U46 Physical Education Curriculum to develop daily lesson plans that provide the knowledge and skills necessary to maximize student participation in the areas of Functional Fitness, Strength and Performance, Walking for Wellness, Team Sports Officiating and Coaching, Independent PE, Lifeguard Certification and Leadership, Aquatics, and/or Junior/Senior Leadership.
- Implements all district assessments and communicates progress to all students and parents.
- Assess student's skills, and knowledge pertaining to physical education for the purpose of providing formal and informal feedback to students, parents, administration and state reporting.
- Provides appropriate safety instruction, supervision, and makes safety checks on equipment, facility space, and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning to manage equipment, supervision of students and growing within their professional learning community.
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
- Attends staff meetings, maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Implements research-based teaching strategies that engage all students to support an environment of inclusion; acknowledging the range of skills, cognitive abilities and cultural backgrounds of the students in U-46.
- Creates an environment conducive to learning and motivates students through effective communication and timely, specific feedback.
- Plans for and guides the learning process toward the mastery of curriculum goals, and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects that are clearly communicated both verbally and in writing to students.
- Implements school improvement plans and strategies.
- Collaborates with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis, and as requested by the administration.
- Utilizes the district referral process and data collection system to seek additional support for students having difficulty accessing the district curriculum.
- Ability to collect individual student data for reporting in Embrace for IEP goals and team meetings
- Understanding and daily implementation of heart rate monitors for assessments and data collection.

- Bachelor's degree required.
- Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed in Physical Education at the PrK-12 or K-12 level required.
- Adapted PE Approval OR completed coursework in Adaptive PE (as shown on transcript) to be able to apply for Adapted PE Approval once hired.
- Ellis Lifeguard Trainer Certification required to teach the Lifeguard Certification and Leadership Course.
- PEL with endorsement in Health Education preferred.
- PEL with ESL endorsement preferred.
- Displays a thorough knowledge of curriculum and subject matter.
- Experience working with students in Adaptive PE.
- Experience tracking and reporting data for individual IEP goals.
- Develop and implement a variety of assessments and data to refine instructional practices.
- Modifies curriculum, instruction, and equipment based on individual student needs.
- Able to assess individual student growth in physical, social, emotional and cognitive areas within the physical education classroom.
- Assessment, and development of IEP goals aligned to physical education curriculum and data tracking
- Ensure smooth operation of all classroom instructional functions.
