Job Summary

The Substitute Teacher provides continuity of instruction and a safe, orderly, Christ-centered learning environment when the regularly assigned teacher is absent. Working from the teacher’s plans and school procedures, this role delivers instruction, supervises students, supports classroom routines, and communicates relevant information to the teacher and school administration.

The Substitute Teacher serves as a positive role model and is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, flexibility, professionalism, and care for students. Assignments are intermittent and based on school need; work hours, grade level, subject, location, and duration may vary. Work is performed in a school environment with frequent interaction with students and staff and may include exposure to noise, outdoor weather, communicable illness, and rapidly changing circumstances.

Roles & Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Instruction & Classroom Continuity
  • Follow the classroom teacher’s lesson plans, schedules, materials, and instructional directions as closely as reasonably possible
  • Provide clear, age-appropriate instruction and learning support using approved curriculum and school practices
  • Maintain student engagement, encourage participation, and provide appropriate assistance while promoting student independence
  • Collect assigned work, record attendance, and leave accurate notes regarding completed lessons, student progress, concerns, and unfinished work
  • Use classroom technology, instructional materials, and equipment responsibly and only as authorized
  • Protect the integrity and confidentiality of assessments, student records, and instructional materials
Student Supervision, Safety & Support
  • Provide active supervision during classroom instruction, transitions, arrival and dismissal, lunch, recess, chapel, assemblies, and other assigned activities
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, orderly, and inclusive learning environment consistent with school expectations
  • Implement established classroom-management and behavior-support practices; seek assistance when concerns exceed the substitute’s authority or training
  • Follow emergency, health, medication, allergy, injury-reporting, student-release, and mandated-reporting procedures
  • Carry out documented student accommodations, health plans, and support directions provided by authorized school personnel, while maintaining confidentiality
  • Immediately report injuries, suspected abuse or neglect, serious behavioral concerns, threats, unsafe conditions, or other urgent student needs to the appropriate administrator
Professional Responsibilities & Communication
  • Report on time, review assignment information, and remain for the full scheduled assignment unless released by a school leader
  • Follow the direction of school leaders and cooperate with teachers, paraprofessionals, office staff, and other school personnel
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and communicate respectfully with students, families, and staff
  • Refer parent or guardian questions regarding curriculum, grades, discipline, or sensitive student matters to the regular teacher or administrator
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, personnel, and school operations
  • Participate in required orientation, safety training, and substitute-teacher procedures
Spiritual Formation
  • Encourage spiritual development through prayer, Bible lesson, and intentional faith integration during care
  • Model Christian values by fostering a Christ-centered environment
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment through active participation in a local Bible-based church
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of effective classroom supervision, age appropriate instruction, and positive behavior-management practices
  • Ability to understand and follow lesson plans, schedules, written procedures, and verbal directions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing
