Terramac is looking for a Design Engineer – Fabrication & Mobile Equipment at our Sugar Grove, IL location. This position is responsible for the design, development, and continuous improvement of assemblies, sheet metal components, and related machine systems. You will work directly with customers, suppliers, engineering, and manufacturing teams to develop and release new products that are functional, durable, and cost-effective.

What You’ll Do:

This position will be capable of providing accurate technical information for the areas they control and will be fully competent in internal processes and systems. You will assist groups throughout the organization on technical inquiries and be the primary engineering resource for at least one machine functional area.

  • Design, package, and release sub‑system level assemblies using engineering fundamentals that ensure machine level requirements are met.
  • Identify and select reliable and cost‑effective components.
  • Review customer CAD data, communicating any deviation requirements, and updating CAD models and drawings as needed.
  • Anticipate potential hazards, assess risk, and design safety into all products and systems.
  • Build expertise in engineering methods, systems, and processes. Educate and train others on technical items and assembly/maintenance of sub‑system(s) in their design control.
  • Perform tests and/or simulations to prove out designs prior to production implementation.
  • Communicate design decisions & constraints within the engineering team.
  • Translate customer drawings, specifications, and verbal direction into fabrication requirements, including tolerances, critical dimensions, and cosmetic and finishing standards.
  • Use Solid Works in design, packaging, and detailing of systems and components.
  • Develop new product designs, specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), drawings, schematics, and other technical information as part of the product development process.
  • Establish specifications and criteria for purchased components to support procurement, including review of substitution and alternative sourcing requests.
  • Provide support to production and quality teams during manufacturing and testing processes.
  • Provide timely and effective customer technical support and process new application project requests.
  • Identify root cause and corrective actions for design‑related engine and product performance issues.
  • Prepare and maintain technical drawings used to build fabricated sheet metal parts and assist shop personnel when additional drawing clarification is needed.
  • Maintain organized electronic storage of technical drawings and revision history.
What You’ll Need:
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
  • 3+ years of engineering experience performing design, analysis, and testing work.
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal design principles, including bend radius, tolerances, and material constraints.
  • Experience with Creo and Solid Works (preferred) or other 3D modeling software, plus proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to read schematics and drawings and translate customer requirements into fabrication‑ready documentation.
  • Demonstrated project management experience and the ability to work hands‑on independently and as part of a team to implement solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and interpersonal skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel domestically up to 10% to OEM facilities and customer locations.
  • Ability to work independently with moderate guidance and checking of work.
What Helps:
  • Preferred: at least one year of experience with sheet metal design, engine and equipment development, or vehicle application interaction.
  • Preferred: knowledge of sheet metal processing in a manufacturing environment and working knowledge of powertrain systems.
  • Preferred: vehicle test experience, knowledge of off‑highway vehicle applications, and customer support experience related to products, parts, and services.
