Intern, Finance (Mechanical)
The Financial Intern is responsible for providing financial oversight for the mechanical Business Unit (BU). The position provides financial insights to build an improved business model, proactively driving value through informed decision-making, fostering a culture of cost consciousness, control, simplification, and continuous improvement. The intern interacts with individuals inside CN, primarily liaising with Financial Planning, Net Ops & Transportation Managers, Senior Managers, and Directors.
CompensationStarting hourly rate range: $19.05 - $29.95 per hour. Rates are based on type of degree and expected graduation date.
Main Responsibilities- Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and analyzing capital and operating expenses.
- Prepare year-end outlook (YEO) based on actual results and spending trends, and drive cost improvements with support from senior financial partners.
- Prepare and distribute monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports on expenditures and key performance metrics, including various analyses as required.
- Monitor, analyze, and explain monthly operating results against budget and forecast.
- Prepare and distribute financial reports to BU, taxation, and accounting property.
- Prepare financial outlooks and forecasts.
- Perform balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Participate in contract renewals.
- Assist in managing accrued liabilities in compliance with corporate accounting rules.
- Prepare business cases, benefits identification and quantification, and ROI analysis.
- Financial Planning experience.
- Experience in budgeting, forecasting, preparing business cases, and productivity reports.
- Accounting experience in journal entries, account reconciliations, and preparing financial reports.
- Experience working in a CN business unit.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Advanced knowledge of SAP, Essbase, and business objects.
- Working toward a bachelor's degree in accounting, commerce, or business.
- Master's degree in business administration (MBA) or working toward one.
- Charted Professional Accountant (CPA) or working toward one.
