Overview

Performance of comprehensive non-invasive, invasive and vascular procedures to demonstrate OB/GYN anatomy under investigation.

Major Responsibilities
  • Performance of comprehensive non-invasive, invasive and vascular procedures to demonstrate OB/GYN anatomy under investigation.
  • Provides physiologic assessment of OB/GYN vasculature and fetal well-being.
  • Independently provides technically optimal, complete and accurate images for diagnosis of the high-risk OB/GYN patient.
  • Combines clinical history while performing sonographic study to summarize findings, and documents information/action to the appropriate physician upon completion of the study.
  • Assists physicians during invasive procedures which include amniocentesis, sonohysterograms, endometrial biopsies, and chorionic villi sampling.
Documentation & Communication
  • Documentation of patient history and results of study.
  • Reviews patient history by clinical information available from charts and verbal review with the patient.
  • Summary of findings by imaging technologist must be entered onto the Perinatal computer network.
  • Notification of appropriate physician of summary of findings.
Equipment & Safety
  • Displays competent understanding and operation of ultrasound equipment.
  • Reports malfunctions to the manager; if unavailable, contact proper company for repairs.
  • Able to start-up and shut down procedures on all equipment; operates all ultrasound equipment competently; modifies technical factors as needed.
  • Ensures images are labeled with patient identification; performs problem solving for equipment malfunctions and limitations; handles all equipment with care.
Delivery of Patient Care
  • Responsible for welfare and care of all patients under their control; implements immobilization devices as necessary for safety and comfort.
  • Introduces self and explains exam to patient.
  • Reconfirms patient identification with two patient IDs and verified procedure requested.
  • Uses scripting when required; maintains professional manner with patients, physicians, family members, etc.; demonstrates competent patient positioning and image critique.
Patient Positioning & Image Review
  • Ability to competently position patients for all ultrasound exams.
  • Solves problems related to physical limitations of patients during positioning.
  • Performs film reviews to determine if more views are necessary; aims for minimal repeat work.
Professional Development
  • Attends continuing education seminars; stays abreast of current literature.
  • Maintains professional accreditation in ARDMS and Nuchal Translucency certification.
  • Attends departmental meetings; maintains CME credits for ARDMS; participates in quality improvement.
  • Maintains CPR certification; provides guidance to new staff, students and others as needed.
Other Duties
  • Ensures a secure, safe patient and work environment; adheres to safety labels and laboratory requisitions.
  • Cleans, prepares and sanitizes equipment per infection control guidelines.
  • Applies sterile techniques and prevents cross-contamination; maintains adequate supplies in US rooms.
  • Provides technical support for smooth operation of the Ultrasound Department.
  • Enters charges for completed procedures; coordinates scheduling with other departments.
  • Assumes lead position in the absence of Lead Technologist/department supervisor; collaborates with Ultrasound Team Lead and supervisor for daily operations.
  • Attends department meetings and in-services; assists in orientation of department personnel; handles related duties as requested by supervisor.
Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required
  • ARDMS - Registered in OB
  • Certified in performing Nuchal Translucency within 6 months
  • CPR certification
Education/Experience Required
  • Graduate of AMA approved school of ultrasound
  • 2 years OB/GYN experience
  • Must become proficient in fetal echocardiography within 1 year of hire date
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Strong skills in OB/GYN and pelvic ultrasound exams
  • Strong skills in endovaginal scanning
  • Strong skills in OB/GYN color duplex scanning
  • Good knowledge of pathology in high-risk OB/GYN imaging
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Requires good judgment, reliability, responsibility, independent thought and action
  • Extreme flexibility in working hours; standing for long periods
  • Perform emergency procedures as required; move equipment to bedside
  • Attend additional in-services to maintain accreditation; participate in safety trainings; possess strong oral and written communication and organizational skills
