Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as an Athletic Trainer with our Orthopaedics team in DCAM - Hyde Park
. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

The University of Chicago Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine provides innovative surgical care and advanced training for tomorrow’s surgical leaders. We are committed to not only meeting but exceeding the patient experience.

The Athletic Trainer in Sports Medicine, Section of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago assists the physicians in coordinating and linking the physician with the patients. Performs duties related to patient care: weighs, measures, and assesses patient vital signs and records data; records reasons for patient visit; assists patient with undressing and dressing; and assists patient on/off stretchers, wheelchairs, and/or exam tables.

Stocks and cleans assigned areas; completes and files paperwork; handles insurance-related authorizations under the supervision of the faculty and Operations Manager.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs initial patient assessments and screens; documents referral sources; collects emergency and caregiver information for the patient; develops and distributes ongoing patient education information; provides bracing and orthotic fabrication and applications, casting, suture removal and post-operative wound assessment and care.
  • Prepares daily clinic schedule assuring accuracy
  • Answers phone calls and emails
  • Files and organizes patient and other Sports Medicine/Surgery/Hospital Paperwork
  • Communicates with patients in person and on telephone with courtesy, sensitivity, and confidentiality
  • Performs patient assessment during post operative phases, and provides education on home care plans for pain care, ADL's, mobility and exercise
  • Carries out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the physician, including assisting in the surgical suite with patient positioning, prepping, draping.
  • Reviews and approves request forms
  • Other Medical and Administrative Functions, such as confirming clinic appointments and assuring the smooth operation of the daily clinic schedule for each physician
  • Performs other duties as requested by senior management.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required from Athletic Training program
  • Licensure as Athletic Trainer in State of Illinois
  • BLS Certification


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous Orthopedic experience preferred
  • 2 years of Athletic Training experience preferred.

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
