Support the daily custodial operations through substitute coverage or extra help under the supervision of the Building Custodian and/or Administrator and the Coordinator of Custodial Services. This role is responsible for the routine operation of custodial equipment and mechanical systems, and for promptly reporting any issues beyond their scope to the appropriate supervisor. The floater custodian ensures the building remains clean, safe, and fully functional throughout the day, contributing to a healthy and comfortable learning environment for students and staff.
Upon successful completion of 180 days of training, this position will be reclassified for advancement to Category B – Custodian Floater.
Job Duties / Responsibilities- Perform daily custodial duties, including mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, trash removal, restocking supplies, and restroom sanitation.
- Assist with semi-annual and annual deep cleaning and project duties, such as floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, restroom maintenance, and graffiti removal.
- Support daily and special event setups including furniture arrangement, cafeteria breakfast and lunch preparation/cleanup, and equipment staging.
- Assist with minor facility maintenance, including replacing ceiling tiles and light bulbs, changing univent filters, assembling furniture, and touch‑up painting.
- Assist with daily/weekly/monthly inspections of building systems, mobile classrooms, fire and security alarms, playgrounds, roofs, generators and boilers. Complete necessary paperwork.
- Maintain “on‑call” status to respond to emergency and/or after‑hour events such as fire alarms, break‑ins, snow/ice management or severe weather damage.
- Adhere to security protocols for locking and unlocking doors, monitor and report security concerns, and immediately address urgent safety issues (e.g., spills, broken glass). Perform basic safety checks during shifts.
- Assist with maintaining inventory and request supplies as needed.
- Support receiving, logging, inspecting and distributing building mail and deliveries; prepare outgoing shipments as needed.
- Use approved communication platforms and the district’s work order system to receive, initiate, track, complete, and close work orders and monitor email and notifications for timely responses.
- Work independently or collaboratively with departmental, district, and/or contractor personnel to ensure efficient operation and upkeep of all facilities.
- Perform general grounds upkeep including snow/ice removal, salting, and landscape maintenance, including trash/debris pick up.
- Perform duties above and/or below skill level for short periods.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License required.
- One year of custodial related duties preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with adults, students and community members.
- Ability to communicate verbally and complete written documentation in English.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Ability to operate industrial‑rated cleaning equipment such as automatic floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, burnishers, wet/dry vacuums.
- Ability to use standard hand tools.
- Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift in excess of 75 lbs. with proper technique.
- Ability to work safely from stepladder, aerial lifts, and/or scaffolding at varying heights up to 40 ft.
- Ability to push/pull 100 pounds with proper technique.
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather for prolonged periods.
This is a 12‑month ESSO position. Salary and benefits are established by the agreement between ESSO and the Board of Education. Flexibility in work days/hours and overtime may be necessary. Travel between buildings may be required.
