Maintenance Manager
Overview
St. Mary of Vernon Catholic Church is seeking a dedicated and experienced full-time Facilities Director. This position is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, safety, repair, cleanliness, and overall operation of all parish buildings, grounds, equipment, and parish vehicles. The Facilities Director supervises maintenance staff, coordinates with outside vendors and contractors, collaborates closely with parish leadership and the Archdiocese of Chicago, oversees the Parish Building Committee, and works alongside parish volunteers and committees.
Responsibilities- Facilities Management & Maintenance:
Oversee the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of all parish facilities, grounds, equipment, and vehicles. Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, mechanical systems, parish vehicles, and general building upkeep. Conduct regular inspections of buildings and grounds to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and code compliance issues. Coordinate and supervise repairs, renovations, and capital improvement projects.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance schedules, inspections, repairs, warranties, and vendor services. Ensure parish vehicles are properly maintained, serviced, licensed, and kept in safe operating condition. - Staff & Volunteer Coordination:
Supervise and schedule maintenance staff to ensure facilities are clean, safe, and functioning properly. Provide leadership, training, and support to maintenance personnel. Assist with daily maintenance tasks and fill in as needed during staffing shortages or emergencies. Work collaboratively with parish volunteers and committees, including the Landscaping Committee. Demonstrate a willingness to learn new systems, processes, and technologies as parish needs evolve. - Vendor, Contractor & Archdiocesan Coordination:
Coordinate with outside vendors, contractors, and service providers for maintenance, inspections, and repairs. Work closely with the Archdiocese of Chicago construction managers on facility-related projects and compliance matters. Obtain quotes and assist with budgeting for repairs and facility projects. Supervise contractor work to ensure quality, safety, and completion of projects before approving invoices and payments. Oversee and support the work of the Parish Building Committee. - Safety & Compliance:
Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, fire safety requirements, and local/state building codes. Support emergency preparedness procedures and respond to facility-related emergencies as needed. Monitor campus security systems, lighting, doors, and safety equipment. - Event & Operational Support:
Work collaboratively with parish staff to support ministry activities and parish operations. Oversee seasonal grounds maintenance, including snow removal coordination, salting, landscaping support, and outdoor upkeep.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or trade experience preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of facilities or building maintenance experience with supervisory responsibilities preferred
- Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, mechanical systems, and general building maintenance
- Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond effectively to emergencies
- Willingness to work collaboratively with volunteers, committees, and staff
- Basic computer skills including email, spreadsheets, and maintenance tracking systems
- Experience working in a parish, church, or institutional environment preferred
- Ability to lift 50 pounds or more
- Ability to walk, climb ladders, bend, and stand for extended periods
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions

This position has an annualized salary range of $55,000.00 - $70,000.00. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on many factors including but not limited to: relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
