Position Highlights: NT4 Ortho-Urology Surgical Unit
- Number of beds on unit: 41
- Patient population: NT4 is a 41‑bed unit specializing in the care of acute orthopaedic and urology surgical patients. It is DNV certified for hip and knee replacement surgeries. Surgical patients include limb trauma patients and low acuity medical patients. As a level trauma center, most regional trauma patients will be admitted to this unit.
- Nurse‑to‑patient ratio: 1:4‑6
- Department culture and resources: North Tower 4 is a fast‑paced throughput unit that highly collaborates with physical and occupational therapists. The average length of stay is a maximum of three days, so staff can experience the entire recovery process. Resources include a full‑time educator, part‑time educator, two nurse supervisors, a manager, and charge nurses.
- Frequent nursing skills/equipment used: Wound vacs, JP drains, Buck’s tractions, external fixators, lift equipment, orthotic devices (boots, slings, walkers, etc.), chest tubes, Foley/IV/mediport insertions, central line care and lab draws, nursing prioritization, IV pumps, PCA pumps, feeding pumps, SCDs, telemetry monitoring, patient connection
- Pass all medications, hang IV piggyback meds and fluids (excluding IV push meds)
- Chart assessments on assigned patients after an RN has completed the initial assessment
- Chart on care plans, which the RN has opened, and have the RN open new care plans as needed
- Communicate with physicians/APPs to receive orders and coordinate care for dressing changes, trach care, NG tube and feeding, and ostomy care
- Reinforce education and discharge instructions
- Assist the RN with high‑acuity patients or the UNL when the unit is full and the LPN will be paired with an RN who has a heavy patient load
- Complete dressing changes and trach care as needed
- Insert and care for NG tubes and feedings
- Care for and change ostomy
- Complete annual education as required by the DNV Hip and Knee Replacement Program
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certified within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
- College diploma as a Licensed Practical Nurse (Required)
