Position: CLINICAL NURSE I - LABOR DELIVERY - BILINGUAL

Job Summary

Clinical Nurse I in Labor Delivery and Bilinguual (Bilingual) Services at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital. The Clinical Nurse I is a professional care provider responsible for coordinating and delivering safe, effective, individualized nursing care, supporting patients and significant others, and assisting other professionals in implementing care plans. The role requires applying the nursing process, technical skills, and nursing judgment based on scientific principles, critical thinking, problem solving, and teaching/learning.

  • Identifies, plans, and cares for the total needs of patients taking into consideration the age‑specific needs of patients in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Performs initial and ongoing assessment/data collection including biophysical, psycho‑social, environmental, self‑care, educational, and discharge planning factors in a systematic manner.
  • Formulates and updates an individualized plan of care based on patients’ assessed needs, desired outcomes, and age‑related requirements.
  • Implements care in a knowledgeable, skillful, and safe manner based on established patient and nursing practice standards.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of care and revises interventions as appropriate.
  • Records assessments, interventions, and patient outcomes.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates educational services/programs for patients, including non‑English speaking populations.
  • Makes appropriate and timely decisions in a crisis or emergency situation.
  • Performs and/or directs cardiopulmonary resuscitation activities.
  • Safely operates equipment necessary for providing patient care in the assigned clinical area.
  • Works and communicates effectively with a variety of patients, visitors, and other individuals.
  • Provides supervision, general direction, guidance, and coordination of patient care given by other nursing staff.
  • Applies knowledge of standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Applies principles of infection control and safety.
  • Demonstrates awareness of patient/family rights and ethical/legal issues.
  • Actively participates in staff orientation and staff development activities for the unit.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities in the unit.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for professional practice, growth, and development.
  • Must be willing to work with patients receiving pre‑procedure, post, and termination of pregnancy services.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois or able to obtain license within two (2) weeks prior to starting employment (proof required at interview if obtained).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (proof required at interview if obtained).
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification or ability to obtain certification prior to conclusion of orientation (proof required at interview if obtained).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification or ability to obtain certification prior to conclusion of orientation (proof required at interview if obtained).
  • Bilingual (testing required prior to interview).
Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) to five (5) years of acute care or labor & delivery experience.
  • LNC‑OB or other specialty certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrates competence in the safe and effective use of clinical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of current requirements of accrediting and regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills necessary for communicating with a variety of individuals from different socio‑economic backgrounds.
  • Strong emergency response skills.
  • Strong customer service and empathy skills.
  • Analytical, organizational, problem‑solving, critical thinking, and conflict management/resolution skills.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and precision.
  • Ability to resolve complex patient/administration problems and research issues.

  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged.
