The R&D Product Specifications Scientist is responsible for the hands-on, day-to-day development of new product specifications, maintenance and continuous improvement of existing specifications, data collection and analysis, and optimization activities across all JBSS product categories. This role is critical to ensuring that every product launched has accurate, robust, and data-driven specifications.
In addition, this individual will manage key customer specification relationships and serve as the primary technical liaison between JBSS and both internal and external customers regarding product specifications.
This position is on-site 4 days a week in Elgin, IL.
Functions of the Position:- Develop new product specifications and ensure alignment with JBSS process capabilities.
- Manage all JBSS product specifications within QAD, Product Vision, customer-owned databases, and across all customers and sales channels.
- Review ingredient specifications and enter required attributes into Product Vision.
- Support food scientists with data collection and analysis activities.
- Ensure gold standard specifications are developed and available for First Production Runs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on specification-related topics and initiatives.
- Document JBSS processes and procedures; update and maintain R&D records and documentation.
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Food Technology, or a related scientific discipline required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the food industry within R&D, Regulatory, and/or Quality Control functions.
- Experience using Product Vision and Minitab software is highly desirable.
- Strong background in product specifications, sensory evaluation, and data analysis, with hands-on experience in food manufacturing and operations preferred.
- Experience with snack foods, nut products, and extrusion processes is a plus.
- Statistics coursework or Six Sigma certification preferred.
- Sensory certification preferred.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
- Proven strengths in organization, data and statistical analysis, recordkeeping, analytical thinking, and problem-solving.
- Demonstrated project management capabilities.
- High proficiency in computer and desktop applications, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Product Vision, and related systems.
