Overview
Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled work in the installation and repair of water mains, storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins, manholes, water lines; repairs, resurfaces and patches roads, bridges and alleys; may operate equipment in the performance of assigned tasks; may act as lead worker on certain assignments in directing the activities of other workers.
Repairs, replaces and patches street surfaces, roads, bridges and alleys; installs and repairs water mains, hydrants, storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins and manholes and water services.
Responsibilities- Perform semi-skilled installation and repair work on water mains, hydrants, storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins and manholes, water services, and related facilities.
- Repair, resurfacing and patch roads, bridges and alleys; operate equipment as assigned.
- May act as lead worker on certain assignments, directing the activities of other workers.
- Repair, replace and patch street surfaces, roads, bridges and alleys.
- Maintain working knowledge of methods and procedures used in public works maintenance and repair operations.
- Maintain working knowledge of operations of vehicles used in public works activities.
- Maintain working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of city streets, alleys and parking lots.
- Maintain working knowledge of installation, maintenance and repair of municipal water and sewer systems (water lines, sewer mains, fire hydrants, manholes and related facilities).
- Understand city streets and locations with the ability to determine the location of water and sewer mains, manholes, catch basins, valves and fire hydrants; basic mechanics for operation, repair and maintenance of machinery, equipment and tools.
- Understand hazards and safety precautions related to street, sewer and water maintenance or repair practices.
- Operate vehicles and equipment proficiently and use standard maintenance equipment.
- Demonstrate manual dexterity to operate, maintain and repair essential equipment and tools.
- Provide guidance and direction to subordinate maintenance personnel.
- Complete arduous tasks and work outdoors during inclement weather conditions.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Maintain effective working relationships with staff, fellow workers and the general public.
- Education and Experience:
Must have a high school diploma or a GED and one year experience in construction, public works maintenance and repair or a related field.
- Requires possession of a valid Illinois Class A CDL Driver's License within 6 months of start date. City-sponsored training.
