Dockworker at Old Dominion. This role is vital to ensuring the safe, efficient loading and unloading of freight, as well as supporting overall warehouse and material handling operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and be team-driven.
Job SummaryThe dockworker must efficiently load and unload freight, ensuring that the correct items are placed on the right trucks. Safety is paramount. Dock workers use equipment such as forklifts and manual techniques to handle materials. Proper securing of freight with airbags, cardboard, straps, and related tools is crucial to prevent damage during transport. The dock worker position directly impacts the reliability of deliveries to customers.
PrimaryResponsibilities
- Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manually in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines.
- Use various loading techniques, such as loading tight or cross loading.
- Transport self and freight throughout the service center on non-forgiving surfaces.
- Utilize Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations.
- Read and interpret shipping labels and complete forms used in freight movement (e.g., shipping orders, manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, exception forms).
- Hand load, rewrap, or stack freight as necessary; ensure quality loading of all trailers.
- Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, rope, and other appropriate tools.
- Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel; operate in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned; employees are expected to be able to perform all duties and tasks as needed.
- Education:
High school degree or equivalent. - Experience:
Working knowledge of safe and efficient lifting and transporting procedures; knowledge of freight transportation procedures; familiarity with loading techniques (e.g., tight loading, cross loading). - Ability to utilize the dock yard management system for monitoring shipment locations.
- Availability to work at all times to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- Ability to operate a handheld tablet when needed.
Physical requirements described are representative of those an employee must meet to perform the essential functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities. Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Duties include standing up to 8 hours per shift, sitting on a forklift, walking up to 8 hours, frequent bending, squatting, climbing onto/off of the forklift, lifting and handling objects up to 100 lbs, and performing repetitive motions.
Must be able to work in hot or cold climates and in environments with varying noise and odors. Attendance and flexibility to work multiple shifts are required.
Work environments may include loading and unloading in enclosed trailers, exposure to all weather conditions, and variable noise and lighting conditions. This description is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties as needed by management.
Compensation & BenefitsCompensation range: $28.00 - $33.40 per hour. Benefits may include health insurance, vision, dental, disability coverage, FSA, 401(k) with company match, life insurance, wellness program, PTO, paid holidays, tuition reimbursement, and opportunities for training and growth.
