The Route Assistant position () is a 10‑month, salaried role that provides support to the bus driver and ensures student safety on behalf of the U‑46 School District.

Position Summary

To provide a safe and secure environment for the students of School District U‑46. To provide support to the school bus driver by assisting with student safety and discipline. Maintain the highest level of professionalism and service at all times while fulfilling these functions and responsibilities.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Enforce and adhere to all mandatory safety regulations of transported students
  • Maintain student behavior and report violations to the appropriate authorities.
  • Support and assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the assigned vehicle.
  • Inspect the bus before each operation for student safety equipment, complete necessary reports, and notify proper authority of safety equipment absence or mechanical failure.
  • Transport only authorized students; discharge students at authorized stops only.
  • Inspect the inside of the bus following each run and prior to exiting the bus for sleeping children and/or forgotten articles.
  • Report all accidents/incidents and complete the required paperwork.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience / Knowledge
  • Must be a safety oriented individual.
  • Must have a pleasant manner and ability to communicate effectively and professionally at all times.
  • Must be organized and detail oriented with the ability to provide student care as needed on an individual and group level.
  • Previous experience interacting with children.
  • Customer service experience preferred.
  • Ability to identify and prevent/diffuse escalating negative behavior.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. with proper technique.
  • Ability to walk within a moving bus.
  • Ability to sit and drive a vehicle approximately as required.
Terms of Employment
  • This is a 10‑month position. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education and set forth in the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Hourly Rate $17.75
