Bookkeeper
A large, growing Modern Orthodox, multigenerational synagogue located in Bergen County, NJ is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Bookkeeper to join our team. This individual will be responsible for managing the synagogue’s day-to‑day financial operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is highly organized, accurate, able to maintain confidentiality, and enjoys working in a collaborative office environment.
Key Responsibilities- Accounts Receivable
- Monitor online banking activity and ensure all transactions are accurately recorded in Quick Books.
- Process incoming checks in Shul Cloud, prepare deposits for export to Quick Books, and make bank deposits.
- Create and maintain member charges in Shul Cloud, ensuring income is properly mapped to Quick Books.
- Generate and distribute monthly member invoices, including membership dues, aliyah charges, event fees, pledges, and other assessments.
- Prepare annual charitable giving statements for members.
- Track and reconcile income from synagogue events, holidays, fundraising campaigns, and special programs.
- Accounts Payable
- Process vendor invoices and generate checks in Quick Books, obtaining required approvals and signatures.
- Manage online bill payments and recurring expenses.
- Record and reconcile all credit card transactions.
- Maintain an organized and up-to-date vendor database.
- Prepare and distribute annual 1099 forms to vendors.
- Manage the petty cash fund and reimburse approved volunteer expenses.
- Financial Management
- Reconcile bank accounts and ensure all transactions are accurately categorized in Quick Books.
- Assist in preparing financial reports and supporting documentation for synagogue leadership and Board meetings.
- Work closely with the Synagogue Controller to maintain accurate financial records and support ongoing financial operations.
Payroll - Collect, verify, and process payroll information using Paychex Flex.
Ensure payroll is processed accurately and on schedule while maintaining employee confidentiality.
- Minimum of 2 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience required.
- Proficiency in Quick Books required.
- Experience with Shul Cloud or a similar CRM/database system preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Experience with Paychex Flex or a comparable payroll platform preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Strong communication, follow-up, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle confidential financial and personnel information with discretion.
- Knowledge of Hebrew is a plus.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small, cohesive office team.
