Part-Time Library Assistant – Elizabeth Public Library (2 Positions Available)
Elizabeth Public Library is seeking friendly, dependable, and customer-focused individuals to join our team. We are currently hiring for the following part-time positions:
1. Library Assistant – Branch Services
Department: Branch Services
Reports To: Branch Manager
Schedule: Part-time (up to 19 hours per week); includes evenings and weekends as assigned
Pay: $18.00 per hour
Library Assistants at our branches provide excellent customer service while supporting the daily operations of our library branches.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing outstanding customer service to patrons of all ages.
- Assisting with the planning, preparation, promotion, and implementation of library programs and events for children, teens, and adults.
- Helping set up and clean up program spaces and activities.
- Assisting patrons with library services, technology, and locating materials.
- Creating and maintaining book displays and promotional materials.
- Shelving, organizing, and maintaining library collections and public areas.
- Supporting outreach and community engagement initiatives as assigned.
- Assisting with opening and closing procedures.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
2. Library Assistant – Circulation
Department: Circulation
Reports To: Circulation Supervisor
Schedule: Part-time (up to 19 hours per week); includes evenings and weekends as assigned
Pay: $18.00 per hour
Library Assistants in the Circulation Department provide courteous and efficient service at the circulation desk.
Responsibilities include:
- Checking library materials in and out using the integrated library system.
- Registering new library cardholders and updating patron accounts.
- Collecting and recording fines and fees.
- Assisting patrons with locating materials, placing holds, and using the library catalog.
- Answering phone calls and in-person inquiries.
- Shelving, organizing, and preparing materials for delivery between branches.
- Assisting with opening and closing procedures.
- Maintaining the confidentiality of patron records.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous customer service, clerical, or library experience preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish or Haitian Creole) preferred.
- Ability to learn library software, databases, and office technology.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Dependable, punctual, and committed to excellent customer service.
- Ability to travel between Elizabeth Public Library locations, including Main, Elmora, LaCorte, and E-Port branches.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry library materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, reach, and move book carts throughout the workday.
