Atomix Educational Trust is entering an exciting new phase of growth and innovation.
A non‑selective Trust spanning early years to adulthood, Atomix connects schools, colleges, alternative provision and a rapidly expanding adult education offer. Despite its size, the Trust has secured one of the largest college awards in the North East, been recognised in Parliamentary Hansard (November 2024) for curriculum innovation, and launched a pioneering aviation pilot programme.
The Trust serves diverse communities with ambition and inclusivity. Over a third of pupils in its primary school are SEND, outcomes are at or above national benchmarks, more than 200 college learners hold EHCPs, and over 12% of students progress to Oxbridge—demonstrating that excellence and equity go hand in hand.
Atomix’s work is shaped by three core pillars: mental health and wellbeing, employability and entrepreneurship, and international perspectives.
With a heritage dating back to 1561—including an original charter from Queen Elizabeth I—the Trust blends deep roots with a forward‑looking vision.
Atomix is now seeking an exceptional Chair of Trustees to provide strategic leadership as it continues to grow and innovate.

- Type of establishment: Multi‑academy trust
As a trustee/director your key responsibilities are to ensure clarity of vision, ethos, and strategic direction; to hold executive leaders to account – both for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and to oversee the organisation’s financial performance to ensure its funds are directed to the best possible educational outcomes for young people.
By volunteering as a trustee/director you will be responsible for contributing to the strategic decision‑making of the board, helping the trust to realise immediate and long‑term goals, and ultimately ensuring transparency, accountability, and challenge.
Volunteering on an academy trust board is a meaningful way to shape young people’s futures and strengthen education in your community. Trustees play a vital role in setting strategic direction and holding executive leaders to account — ensuring schools deliver the best outcomes. Alongside making a tangible impact, you’ll gain valuable experience in senior‑level decision‑making. This is a great opportunity to support your career development, build a non‑executive portfolio, and give back to education.
