The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development. The Division of Student Affairs aids, directs and informs students about services and programs that will expand students’ educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom/off campus aspects of student life at ECSU, including student engagement and leadership;

career services; student disability services, residential life; student activities; community standards; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and career services.

The Associate Dean of Students is a resource, advocate, and liaison for a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents/families, and community partners that support and contribute to student resiliency and success at Elizabeth City State University. This position oversees the management and operations of the university’s Office of Community Standards and supports campus-wide programming, and events related to critical student support.

The Associate Dean of Student Development is responsible for administering the Student Conduct process, and collaborating on complex case management. This position is highly collaborative and plays an active role in non-clinical behavior modification, ethics, and decision making-model implementation, as well as implementing both long and short-term response plans. This position stands in on behalf of the Dean of Student, as needed, for emergency fund management, guidance for CARE team activities, and the Student Affairs on-call student crisis/emergency team and is designated as a Campus Security Authority and Responsible Employee.

This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/ Dean of Students, works collaboratively with the Assistant Dean of Communal Engagement and designated leadership overseeing residential education program, and student success within the residence halls.

• Possess the ability to articulate the role that community standards and student conduct have in supporting retention and the overall academic mission of the university.
• Demonstrated experience with training and teaching young adults and non-traditional students; experience with program and leadership-skill development, preferred. This includes preference for those who have trained graduate assistants and other para-professionals.
• Possess the ability to understand the University environment, work collaboratively on and off-campus partners, and build and sustain relationships with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents/ families, and community partners to address a wide array of situations.
• Possess the ability to navigate sensitive situations with diplomacy while exercising excellent judgment that is congruent with federal, state, and university policy.
• Possess current knowledge and experience applying best practices and appropriate legal/procedural regulations related to addressing students of concern.
• Possess superior critical thinking, organization, and oral and written communication skills with the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Possess knowledge of the FERPA, HIPAA, Title II, Title IX, VAWA, and other applicable federal/state guidelines and laws that affect the practice of student support and advocacy that may influence community standard outcomes.
