Job Overview

Paraprofessional Technicians provide applied-behavior-analytic services for patients diagnosed with developmental disabilities, pediatric feeding disorders, or other behavioral diagnoses under the direction of a professional behavior analyst (e.g., board certified behavior analyst, licensed psychologist). The Paraprofessional Technician assists with patient assessments and program implementation. They assist with organizing and maintaining data-collection and statistical-analysis systems, research activities, and staff training. This position is focused in the Pediatric Feeding Disorder unit.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct sessions with patients using standard procedures under the direction of a professional behavior analyst
  • Provide suggestions of possible procedures and methods to a professional behavior analyst
  • Assist professional behavior analyst in implementing intake, assessment, treatment, and discharge procedures
  • Prepare initial drafts of session materials, session descriptions, and progress notes
  • Enter assessment and treatment data into spreadsheets and graph the data
  • Report the behavior and environment in observable and measurable terms to a professional behavior analyst and provide goal updates
  • Perform initial analysis of findings and present recommendations to a professional behavior analyst
  • Assist in the creation of data-collection protocols and systems
  • Assist with the development of skill-acquisition programs (e.g., increasing acceptance and consumption of healthy food and liquid, developmental feeding skills such as self-feeding or chewing, social and communication skills, curriculum-based developmental, social skills)
  • Assist with the development of behavior-reduction programs (e.g., extinction protocols to reduce inappropriate mealtime behavior, non-contingent reinforcement to reduce crying, functional communication training)
  • Assist in the training of caregivers (e.g., parents, school personnel)
Auxiliary Program Support
  • Assist in organization, cleanliness, and maintenance of department location, materials, and equipment
  • Assist clinical faculty and professional behavior analysts with various research activities
QualificationsRequired:
  • High-school degree/GED
  • American Heart Association BLS Provider
Preferred:
  • Experience working with patients or individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities, pediatric feeding disorders, or other behavioral diagnoses in an educational, instructional, or therapeutic setting
Certifications And Licenses Required:
  • American Heart Association BLS Provider
Scheduling Requirements
  • Monday – Friday
  • Part Time – 20 hours/week
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to move, lift, and carry patients and objects
  • Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients may involve independently lifting up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assisting with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds
  • Use of abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue
  • Frequent movement, use of limbs, and good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina
  • Extended periods of standing or sitting
Other Duties
  • Paraprofessional Technicians may work with patients who vomit, or who engage in other forms of challenging behavior, such as aggression, self-injury, elopement, expulsion (spitting out food or liquid during treatment), or property destruction
