Overview
An Army Cyber Network Defender (MOS 25D) protects Army computer networks by detecting cyber‑attacks, conducting vulnerability assessments, and deploying defensive measures. The role requires a high‑level technical background, a Top Secret clearance, and progressive Army experience to reach Staff Sergeant (E-6) or higher.
Responsibilities- Respond to cyber‑attacks and mitigate immediate threats.
- Assess network vulnerabilities and conduct threat analyses.
- Implement, test, and deploy network security infrastructure.
- Produce detailed analysis reports and recommend mitigation actions.
- Educate commanding officers and subordinates on cyber security threats and defensive procedures.
- Rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6) or higher.
- Minimum four years of experience in Information Technology (IT) and Information Architecture (IA).
- Top Secret security clearance (or eligibility for SCI).
- ASVAB General Technical (GT) and Skilled Technical (ST) scores of 105.
- Strong discipline, attention to detail, and ethical standards.
- Physical and mental fitness to perform under pressure.
After reaching E-6 and meeting education and security requirements, 25D training is received at USA Signal School, Fort Gordon, Georgia. Training combines classroom instruction, field exercises, and cyber‑operations drills to develop offensive and defensive cyberspace skills.
Pay and Benefits- Base pay ranges from $35,760 for E-6 to over $84,000 for E-8.
- Base pay excludes BAH and BAS, which add $11,000 to $61,650 per year at E-6.
- Benefits include 30 days paid vacation, 100% medical and dental coverage, retirement pay, education allowances, and special reenlistment bonuses.
Military experience in cyber network defense equips holders for civilian roles such as Information Security Analyst, Computer Systems Analyst, or Information Systems Manager. The Information Security Analyst occupation is projected to grow 35% through 2031.
