Job OverviewThe Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an independent health‑care provider who coordinates care through collaboration with the attending physician. The PA or APN provides care in accordance with the objectives, policies and procedures of the practice and the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee. The main function of this role is to provide consistent, high‑quality perioperative/postoperative care for all surgical patients.
The APP will be expected to serve as an active member of the surgery patient care team, performing surgical first assisting, perioperative/postoperative management, hospital rounds on inpatients, and emergency room consultations. The APP will work to the full extent of their licensure with an emphasis on supervised autonomy.
Required (APN/NP):
- Current APN Certification
- Current RN NJ state license
- CDS
- DEA
- Current BLS/ACLS
- RNFA Certification (exception if Surgical NP certification includes surgical assist)
Required (Physician Assistant):
- Current Physician Assistant Certification
- CDS
- DEA
- Current BLS/ACLS
Preferred:
- Acute care certification
- 3–5 years of acute care hospital experience
Scheduling Requirements:
- Scheduled as needed (Days, Night Shift, Weekends, Holidays)
- Per Diem
- Perform history and physical examinations in preparation for surgical procedures
- Order appropriate laboratory, radiologic and special diagnostic tests and interpret results for the surgical team
- The APP may be asked to see emergent consults in the ED and treat conditions within the scope of practice and experience when appropriate
- Communicate complicated surgical emergencies and appropriate preparation for surgery
- Assist with inpatient daily rounds as assigned
- Insert or discontinue central lines, including chest tubes, arterial lines, and wound dressings, and perform temp dialysis catheters, daily physical exams, and address any patient concerns on the service
- Thoroughly explain procedures to patients before testing
- Perform appropriate interpretation of laboratory/diagnostic testing
- Responsible for discharging patients in collaboration with the attending
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills, communicate effectively, and demonstrate time management
- Perform duties independently and coordinate care with the bedside nurse, attending physician, and other consulting providers
