Job Summary

The Academic Tutor is responsible for leading small literacy and math groups to address their students' needs and goals. This position ensures that instructional activities are focused on grade-level standards and adopted high-quality instructional materials.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Provide high-dosage, small group tutoring (1:1 to 1:3 ratio) in literacy and/or math using state-approved instructional materials aligned to Tennessee academic standards.
  • Deliver tutoring sessions with consistency and fidelity (minimum required minutes per week per student) as outlined by TN ALL Corps program guidelines.
  • Implement evidence-based instructional strategies, including structured literacy approaches for reading and skill-based intervention in mathematics.
  • Use diagnostic and formative assessment data to identify student skill gaps, set measurable goals, and monitor progress regularly.
  • Maintain detailed student progress monitoring records and submit required documentation in accordance with district and TN ALL Corps reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align tutoring instruction with core classroom curriculum and reinforce grade-level learning objectives.
  • Participate in required TN ALL Corps training, coaching, and professional development sessions to ensure program fidelity and continuous improvement.
  • Support students in building academic confidence, engagement, and positive learning behaviors.
  • Maintain consistent communication with school staff regarding student attendance, progress, and intervention adjustments.
  • Assist in ensuring high student attendance and engagement in tutoring sessions by supporting outreach and follow-up when needed.
  • Uphold district policies regarding student confidentiality, safety procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Education and Experience

    • High school diploma, including at least one of the following:
      • An associate degree
      • 48 semester hours of college credit from an accredited institution
      • Documentation verifying a passing score on the paraprofessional assessment test

    Knowledge of

    • Basic subjects taught in local schools, such as arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, and reading
    • Basic instructional methods and techniques
    • Correct usage of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
    • Safe classroom practices and appropriate student conduct
    • General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics
    • Standard office and classroom equipment and relevant software applications.

    Skill in

    • Maintaining student confidentiality and handling information and materials with complete security.
    • Maintaining accurate, complete, and correct records for all students.
    • Being understanding, patient, and receptive towards students of various age groups, temperaments, and abilities.
    • Utilizing instructional materials, assistive technology, and communication devices used by students.

    Ability to

    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, and staff.
    • Act calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.
