The Middle School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction that enables students to develop historical understanding geographic literacy, civic knowledge, economic reasoning, and the ability to analyze evidence and communicate informed conclusions. The teacher will design and deliver engaging lessons aligned with the Tennessee Academic Standards for Social Studies and district curriculum, assess student progress, and support students in analyzing primary and secondary sources, evaluating multiple perspectives, and developing evidence-based claims.

The teacher will foster a positive classroom environment that supports academic success and reflects the district's commitment to Experience Excellence.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Plan and deliver engaging social studies lessons aligned with Tennessee Academic Standards and district curriculum.

Develop and implement instructional strategies that promote historical understanding, geographic literacy, civic knowledge, economic reasoning, cultural understanding, and critical thinking.

Engage students in historical and social studies inquiry through the analysis of primary and secondary sources, maps, charts, graphs, timelines, artifacts, and other forms of evidence.

Teach students to evaluate sources, consider multiple perspectives, distinguish fact from opinion, develop evidence-based claims, and communicate conclusions through discussion and writing.

Utilize a variety of instructional methods, including document-based inquiry, technology integration, collaborative learning, academic discussion, and differentiated instruction, to meet the needs of all learners.

Integrate the major social studies disciplines, including history, geography, civics/government, economics, culture, and relevant Tennessee history and connections, as appropriate to grade-level standards and curriculum.

Assess student learning through formative and summative assessments and use data to guide instructional decisions and support mastery of grade-level standards.

Provide timely feedback to students and parents regarding academic progress.

Create a safe, supportive, inclusive, and structured classroom environment that encourages respectful discourse, student engagement, academic curiosity, and accountability.

Provide opportunities for students to examine historical events, civic principles, geographic relationships, economic concepts, and cultural developments within appropriate historical and contemporary contexts.

Collaborate with other teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators to improve instructional practices and student outcomes.

Participate in professional development activities and implement best practices in social studies instruction.

Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance.

Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom expectations.

Support school-side and district initiatives and participate in faculty meetings, committees, and school events as assigned.

Follow all district policies, procedures, and state requirements.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
