Job Summary

The School Nurse provides direct nursing care and health services to students and staff under the supervision of the District Nurse and in accordance with the Tennessee Nurse Practice Act. The LPN supports student health, safety, and wellness by administering medications and treatments, responding to illnesses and emergencies, assisting with the implementation of individualized healthcare plans, maintaining accurate health records, and promoting a safe and healthy school environment.

Working collaboratively with school personnel, families, healthcare providers, and community agencies, the School Nurse helps ensure students' health needs are met so they can fully access and participate in the education program.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Provide nursing care to students and staff within the scope of LPN practice and under the supervision of the District Nurse.
  • Assess and respond to student illnesses, injuries, and health concerns, providing first aid and emergency care as appropriate.
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, district policy, and state regulations.
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and health-related accommodations for students.
  • Support students with chronic health conditions, including diabetes, asthma, seizure disorders, allergies, and other medically complex needs.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential student health records and documentation.
  • Monitor immunization compliance and assist with required state health reporting.
  • Maintain the school health clinic, ensuring adequate medical supplies, equipment, and infection control practices.
  • Follow Universal Precautions, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards, and district safety procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and activate emergency medical services when necessary.
  • Assist with required health screenings, including vision, hearing, and other state-mandated screenings.
  • Provide health education and serve as a resource for students, staff, and families regarding health-related concerns.
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, families, healthcare providers, and community agencies to promote student health and wellness.
  • Assist with training school staff in medication administration, emergency procedures, and other health-related topics as assigned.
  • Participate in required professional development and maintain competencies required for school nursing practice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the District Nurse.
  • Minimum

    Education and Experience
    • Hold a current Tennessee Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing.
    • Meets all Tennessee Department of Education and Tennessee Department of Health requirements for school health personnel.
