DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
LOCATION: Multiple (Freeman Lake Park, American Legion Park, Ball Park Maintenance, Trails)
POSITION OVERVIEWSummer Camp Counselors are responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and fun environment for children participating in the City of Elizabethtown Parks & Recreation Summer Camp. Counselors work directly with campers throughout the day, leading activities, supervising groups, and helping provide structure and positive guidance.
This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children, thrive in a team-based environment, and can stay organized and energetic during long, active days. Camp operates in a fast-paced setting with activities taking place both indoors and outdoors, and counselors are expected to be flexible, patient, and attentive at all times.
Providing a safe environment for campers is the top priority—while also making camp an enjoyable and memorable experience.
Examples of Duties- Supervise campers and actively engage with them throughout the camp day
- Lead and assist with games, arts and crafts, group activities, and special programming
- Help maintain structure, routines, and positive behavior within camper groups
- Supervise campers during field trips, guest speakers, and off-site activities
- Communicate professionally with parents or guardians when incidents or concerns arise
- Assist with daily setup, cleanup, and organization of activity spaces
- Help ensure the safety and well-being of all campers at all times
- Work collaboratively with fellow counselors and camp leadership
- Assist with other Parks & Recreation programs, events, or activities as assigned
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Enjoy working with children and be able to actively supervise groups
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Strong communication skills with both children and adults
- Ability to adapt to changing schedules, activities, and environments
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of conditions
- CPR and First Aid certification from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or similar organization is preferred but not required
- This is a seasonal position with the Parks & Recreation Summer Camp
- Long, active days should be expected
- Training will be provided prior to the start of camp
