The Special Education Teacher in Training role provides a structured pathway to becoming a licensed Special Education Teacher. For your first ninety (90) days, you will work as a Special Education Paraprofessional while partnering closely with an experienced Special Education Teacher. During this period, National Heritage Academies (NHA) will provide financial assistance for you to complete required coursework and pass the necessary exams to earn your K–12 Intervention Specialist license through the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).
Once licensure is obtained, you will transition from the Paraprofessional role into a full‑time, salaried Special Education Teacher position.
- Assess student abilities and provide instructional and behavioral assistance for students in accordance with their individual education plan (IEP) and/or their 504-behavior plan as directed by the special education team.
- Support can be provided 1:1 or in small groups.
- Commit to educating the whole student – academically, morally, and socially.
- Implement result-driven curriculum and instruction specially designed to meet the unique needs of each student resulting from his/her disability such as, resource room, inclusion and/or pullout services.
- Attend professional development, specialized trainings and IEP meetings with special education team and parents as required.
- Assist with the required compliance documentation.
- Hold a bachelor A0degree with a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
- Willingness to enroll in an alternative certification program.
- Willingness to take (and pass) state examinations for licensure.
