Overview
Staff Nurse (RN) – Oncology New Graduate Nurse Residency Program – The James Department:
James | James Nurse Residency.
The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital Nurse Residency Program offers unique opportunities for newly licensed graduate nurses to transition from student to professional through a full‑time, structured, 14‑20 week paid orientation to the field of oncology nursing. The James is one of 40 National Cancer Institute‑designated comprehensive cancer centers and is the home of pioneering cancer research, prevention, and treatment in a dynamic university hospital setting.
The residency program incorporates Patricia Benner’s theoretical model of novice to expert and facilitates socialization into the Medical Center through hands‑on clinical experience, in‑depth classroom learning, and ongoing professional and personal development.
Each resident receives support from a Nurse Residency Program Educator who has advanced nursing education and experience in transitioning new nurses from students to professionals and in the clinical specialty areas. The Educator is also responsible for scheduling, facilitating the personalized residency experience, continuously revising the track‑specific orientation pathway, and evaluating the progress of each resident based on multidisciplinary team feedback and the resident’s self‑evaluation.
New Graduate Nurse Residency positions are available in the following areas:
Hematology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Progressive Care/Step Down (PCU).
The Staff Nurse functions as a member of a team of care providers cultivating collaboration, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed toward achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient’s involvement in his or her own plan of care, improving service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization, and decreasing costs. The Staff Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and his or her family, and for directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team.
The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, delegating, and evaluating the nursing care of patients. The Staff Nurse prioritizes patient care needs and provides leadership to and the development of the patient care team.
