Registered Nurse In Emergency Department

The Registered Nurse implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. Creates a caring environment focused on healing and wellness. Nursing practices are based on evidence and current research, along with policies and procedures. Clinical decision-making incorporates all phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Promotes nursing excellence through relationships among nursing staff and across other disciplines.

Coordinates, ensures, and provides direct patient care activities on the unit. Conducts nursing rounds, assessments, and treatments. Facilitates admission, transfer, and discharge activities. Provides patient and family-centered education. Coordinates care and develops individualized treatment plans when applicable. Performs and documents comprehensive assessments according to scope of practice and policies. Considers the patient's culture, age, and developmental level. Identifies patient risk factors and presenting complaints.

Obtains health information from family or others as necessary. Collects objective and subjective data. Verifies initial assessments if obtained by other healthcare team members. Develops a problem list and prioritizes patient needs based on input from the team. Designs actions and interventions relevant to the patient's culture and age. Determines desired outcomes in coordination with patient and family. Fully implements patient care therapies and procedures with clinical autonomy.

Explains procedures and treatments to patients and families. Initiates action to alleviate patient stress and discomfort. Recognizes, responds to, and communicates changes in patient condition appropriately. Conducts ongoing assessments and documents responses to therapies according to hospital policy. Delegates tasks appropriately and oversees team members in patient care activities. Monitors the accuracy and completeness of delegated patient care. Identifies and addresses educational needs of patients related to prioritized problems.

Facilitates the discharge process by executing discharge orders in a timely manner. Assures performance of discharge teaching and coordinates plans with Case Management. Provides input into patient/nurse assignments, considering staffing and patient acuity. Participates in unit-based activities supporting organizational values and priorities. Promotes a positive group dynamic and healing environment. Assures nursing excellence according to accepted standards and evidence-based practices.

Participates in quality improvement activities and core measures. Uses a holistic perspective regarding patient care.
