Assistant Teaching Professor Of Engineering Mathematics
Elizabethtown College invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor of Engineering Mathematics within the School of Engineering and Computer Science, beginning January or August 2027. This is a teaching-focused position supporting an Applied Calculus sequence, the foundational mathematics experience for Engineering and Computer Science students. This position will teach in-person classes.
We seek an innovative and engaging educator with a strong background in mathematics education and student learning in quantitative disciplines, who is prepared to deliver calculus through applied, modeling-based, and student-centered approaches aligned with engineering and computing contexts. The ideal candidate will contribute to a collaborative teaching culture that emphasizes active learning, mastery-based assessment, and real-world application of mathematics.
The School of Engineering and Computer Science offers an ABET-accredited multidisciplinary Engineering program and is nationally recognized for its mastery-based pedagogy and active engagement with the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN).
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher (ABD, Ed.D. or Ph.D. preferred) with a focus in Mathematics Education or Engineering Education
- Experience teaching pre-calculus and calculus for Engineering majors.
- Formal graduate training in mathematics education research or engineering education research.
- Demonstrated use of active learning or mastery-based teaching practices.
- Experience assessing mathematics curricula and instructional techniques.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate mathematics, particularly pre-calculus, Calculus I, and Calculus II, with an emphasis on student learning, conceptual understanding, and applied problem solving.
- Experience incorporating modeling, computational tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB), or real-world applications into mathematics instruction.
- Engagement with KEEN (Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network)
- Experience supporting diverse learners and improving student persistence in STEM pathways.
- Familiarity with assessment of gateway mathematics courses.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Instruction of approximately 16 contact hours per week, including multiple sections of first- and second-year Applied Calculus.
- Primary responsibility for teaching the Applied Calculus sequence.
- Coordination and continuous improvement of course content, instructional practices, and assessment within the Applied Calculus sequence.
- Potential to teach other courses aligned with elementary and secondary mathematics education.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participation in Departmental, School, and institutional service, including shared governance and student recruitment activities.
- Contribution to ECS's collaborative and innovative teaching culture.
- Ongoing engagement in professional development related to mathematics education and student learning in STEM.
