Long-Term Substitute Guidance Counselor
The Elizabethtown Area School District seeks an energetic and qualified candidate for an immediate opportunity to join the student support staff as a long-term substitute Guidance Counselor at East High Elementary School. The counselor will support the school counseling program focusing on academic readiness, early career awareness, and interpersonal/social-emotional development by collaborating with school personnel, community agencies, and families to address student needs and promote growth aligned with District curriculum and assessment measures.
Essential Functions / Duties:
- Direct Student Support & Counseling:
Provide individual counseling, small group facilitation, and classroom instruction focused on social-emotional growth, conflict resolution, self-regulation, and foundational academic/career concepts tailored for K2 learners. - Special Education & Gifted Coordination:
Organize gifted and Learning Disability (LD) referrals; coordinate associated screening and testing; and write, determine eligibility for, and maintain 504 plans for eligible students. - Team & Meeting Participation:
Attend and actively participate in Student Services, Multi-Disciplinary Evaluations (MDE), IEP, GIEP, Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), and Student Assistance Program (SAP) meetings; serve as a key member of the Building Crisis Team. - Consultation & Referrals:
Serve as a resource for parents, teachers, and administrators. Connect families to school-based resources and external community support agencies. - Transitions & Data Collection:
Coordinate transition services between early childhood/preschool environments and elementary levels. Collect and analyze student data via record review, observation, and screeners to remove educational barriers. - Records & Communication:
Maintain accurate cumulative records, facilitate student enrollments/withdrawals/scheduling updates, and maintain open lines of communication with stakeholders via district media, newsletters, and direct outreach.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.
Evaluation Competencies & KSA Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge of child development, counseling theory, techniques, and content-related pedagogy suitable for early learners (K-2). Proven ability to facilitate small groups, manage behavioral dynamics, and partner collaboratively with staff, students, and administrators. Strong decision-making, planning, and organizational skills, along with judgment in academic and behavioral matters. Exceptional oral and written communication skills across diverse audiences (young children, parents, and colleagues).
Proficiency in Apple Mac, Microsoft Office, and relevant educational technologies.
Education & Certification Requirements:
Education:
Master's Degree in School Counseling required. Certification:
Valid Pennsylvania Elementary School Counselor Certification (PK12 or Elementary).
Experience:
Completion of required student teaching or equivalent internship; immediate availability for long-term substitute position. Travel:
Local travel within district as needed for meetings and training.
Physical and Mental
Job Requirements:
Physically active; standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, and sitting on child-sized furniture or floor mats for sustained periods. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. Manual dexterity for keyboarding, data input, and preparing visual learning materials. High level of mental agility, flexibility, and calm composure in a fast-paced environment supporting young children.
