Position Summary

The Sr Systems Engineer is responsible for motion control system engineering design and controls development work for various applications in the Off‑highway equipment market and U.S. defense industry. Initiating, developing and validating motion control systems on target market applications, the engineer utilizes motion control knowledge to apply the correct technology to meet project goals.

Scope, Supervision, and Interaction

The position initiates and develops motion control system design concepts to meet project goals such as cost objectives, schedule requirements, and defined performance criteria. The engineer regularly serves as a consultant and resource for the targeted customer base on topics related to the motion control industry, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and electromechanical solutions.

Essential Functions
  • Layout, design, and create hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical drawings via CAD systems.
  • Develop control architectures for advanced motion control systems or subsystems using various control strategies and electronic control modules when necessary.
  • Perform mathematical modeling and simulation for hydraulic systems with computer‑aided tools.
  • Develop test plans for system/subsystems and perform accelerated performance testing of hydraulic systems and components on prototype builds.
  • Monitor prototype builds and ensure proper assembly and functionality.
  • Review, analyze, and report on system performance compliance via test reports, spec sheets, etc., and develop action plans to meet compliance when necessary.
  • Write work instructions for prototype and test technicians and work in a lab environment as required to complete prototype build and testing.
  • Provide leadership and coordination to the engineering team, working with a multi‑functional team to develop cost‑effective, reliable, and manufacturable systems/sub‑systems.
  • Define and document system descriptions and validation processes with required embedded traceability to achieve acceptance.
  • Develop system interfaces, maintenance, and training approaches and documentation, including functional diagrams, schematics, interface control documents, and performance reports.
  • Provide technical system information that affects long‑range plant and product engineering planning. Communicate with customers to identify new business opportunities, present Parker systems capabilities, and clarify technical requirements.
  • Lead or participate in studies evaluating the feasibility of new or modified equipment and related systems, considering technical and economic factors, available resources, time constraints, and customer impact.
  • Investigate pertinent system design factors such as functionality, performance, material availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength‑weight efficiency, and contractual specifications.
  • Prepare or direct preparation of system layouts, detailed drawings, and schematics in coordination with engineering design and using industry or military design standards.
  • Review drawings and layouts to ensure clarity, completeness, functionality, and conformity to standards, identifying design errors, omissions, or deficiencies, and directing revisions.
  • Lead efforts to obtain industry/government agency approval.
  • Apply continuous improvement principles and techniques, recommending actions based on data analysis and comparative studies.
  • Maintain professional knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing publications, benchmarking best practices, or participating in professional associations.
  • Represent the company on high‑level projects, share specialized knowledge, mentor less experienced employees, and contribute to team effort as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and a minimum of five years’ experience in the design of OEM construction equipment or the U.S. defense industry.
  • Sound understanding of motion control technologies and control strategies, with experience consulting on hydraulics, pneumatics, and electromechanical solutions.
  • Previous OEM machine application knowledge and basic project management techniques.
  • Technical proficiency with hydraulic closed‑loop and open‑loop system design concepts.
