Position Overview
This position is accountable for bridge inspections including National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), Element, Underwater, Special Feature, Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member, and Load Rating Inspections, as well as for providing information necessary to complete bridge condition reports and for performing other bridge related inspections for all the bridges in the assigned geographic area.
Essential Functions- Performs annual bridge inspection programs including NBIS, Element, Underwater, Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member, Special Feature Inspection, and Load Rating Inspections for the assigned geographic area.
- Schedules personnel and equipment to ensure inspection schedules are met.
- Ensures effective expenditure of budgetary funds.
- Ensures technical expertise necessary to perform bridge inspections. Team Leader certification is required before approving bridge inspections.
- Trains, provides guidance, and mentors newer personnel within the bridge section on proper inspection techniques and safe methods of bridge inspections.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules and in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
- Four years of experience in civil engineering.
- Six years of experience in civil engineering, maintenance, and/or construction including four years of supervisory responsibility of which three years should be in highway engineering.
- Qualified as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader in Illinois.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Requires successful completion of a background screening.
- Requires the ability to take and pass the NHI Class 130056 Safety Inspections of In-Service Bridges, as well as obtain 6 months of bridge inspection experience.
- Requires the ability to obtain the Bridge Inspection Team Leader Certification in Illinois within 12 months after hire date.
- Requires the ability to climb and inspect various types of bridges.
- Requires district wide travel.
- Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
