Job Description

RRD is looking for an energetic, highly motivated team member to join our team of Press Operators at our Elk Grove Village facility.

Press Operator 3

Responsibilities
  • Operate web printing press to print quality production, maintain product quality, lead and direct press crew, maintain press, and perform other operational duties as directed by supervisors
  • Set up, adjust, operate, and maintain a Litho Press, In-line double web press, Harris M10, and a mini web 6 color printing press or multi-color offset press to print single-color, two-color, and/or multi-color work which includes large solids, screen tints, line and halftones with critical color values and registration requirements ranging from hairline to critical
  • Review job specifications to determine the press setup according to the imposition of the run (sheet wise or work and turn)
  • Perform all make‑ready tasks associated with the type of press operated such as hanging plates or installing cylinders, examine plates/cylinders for imperfections and checks for correct positioning of images, prepping blankets, adjusting tension and register etc
  • Make necessary color corrections and/or press adjustments prior to production run to meet and maintain the quality specifications of the work
  • Clean, lubricate, and maintain the press, making minor repairs and replacing worn or broken parts as required
  • Perform periodic maintenance recommended by the manufacturer
  • Act as a leader in providing and promoting a safe and injury‑free work environment
  • Be responsible for all aspects of the operation of the press and press crew
  • Be responsible for overall quality of the printed product including color reproduction, product specifications, imaging quality and postal specifications
  • Determine when product is suitable for saving
  • Be responsible for producing a sample-quality product
  • Monitor other crew members’ progress while performing their responsibilities
  • Provide accurate documentation of time, materials, impressions, waste, and run speeds
  • Communicate information effectively with other crews and departments, scheduling, prepress, maintenance
  • Coordinate make‑ready process by reviewing job information, establishing make‑ready plan, and assigning responsibilities to crew members
  • Be responsible for maintaining a preventive maintenance program for the press, and use the “Request for Action” system to notify the maintenance department of issues with the equipment
  • Share expertise and help train other employees as assigned
  • Perform other responsibilities as required
Qualifications
  • Previous experience working as a Press Operator 2 or 3 in Direct Mail or similar industry
  • Requires comprehensive knowledge of a wide variety of techniques, procedures, materials, specifications, equipment, and safety requirements to set up, adjust, operate, and maintain equipment to produce single-, two-, and/or multi-color work to critical tolerances
  • Skill in a wide variety of complex manipulations and mechanical procedures to perform a variety of tasks to set up, make major adjustments, and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs of equipment to produce single-, two-, and/or multi-color work
  • Skill to read and understand job specifications and knowledge of press capabilities to determine the most appropriate press usage, press settings, and materials needed to run the job successfully
  • Skill in use of a micrometer to mount and align the printing plate correctly
