Position: Special Education Assistant I (6.75 hours/day; 4 Positions Available)

Special Education Assistant I

Position available at Elk River High School (6.75 hours/day; 4 positions). First day: 09/01/2026. Beginning pay: $21.61 per hour.

Job Summary

The Special Education Assistant I supports the teacher and students with special education needs by providing individualized and group tutoring, monitoring student performance in mainstream classes, supervising students in and out of the classroom, and assisting with clerical tasks. The assistant facilitates communication between teachers, students, and peers, and promotes language and communication development. The role also includes providing first aid/CPR when needed and maintaining confidentiality of all family and program information.

Responsibilities
  • Tutor students with special education needs individually or in groups and assist in behavior management so that students complete work within appropriate behavior guidelines.
  • Monitor students in mainstream classes and facilitate communication between the special education teacher and mainstream teachers to keep them informed of student performance and behavior.
  • Perform general clerical and record‑keeping duties, including data collection and entry, copying, maintaining student files such as Individual Educational Plans (IEPs), and conducting mailings to parents.
  • Supervise special education students in settings outside the classroom to ensure they act safely and appropriately.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in providing instruction, helping students, and correcting tests as assigned.
  • Assist students with activities on site and in the community to enable participation in educational programs.
  • Attend student staffing as requested.
  • Maintain confidentiality of family and program information in compliance with school district policy, state, and federal law.
  • Provide first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when needed.
  • Reinforce language and related skills previously taught by staff to promote learning.
  • Facilitate communication between teachers, other students, and students with special needs through the use of sign language when appropriate.
  • Other job‑related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
  • High‑school degree, GED, or equivalent experience.
  • Meet the Highly Qualified Paraprofessional requirement or obtain one within the probationary period:
    • At least two years of college credit (usually 60 credits in Minnesota).
    • Obtain the PELSB Paraprofessional Credential.
    • Passing score of 460 (or higher) on the Para Pro Assessment.
    • Passing score of 65% (or higher) on the Instructional Support test and 70% (or higher) on the Knowledge and Application test of the Minnesota Service Cooperatives Para Educator Proctored Test.
  • Ability to use office equipment; experience with current office software desirable.
  • Training and/or experience with computer equipment may also be required.
  • Works well with students, including understanding and addressing their functional needs as they relate to school performance.
  • Willingness to accept and follow direction.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to physically transfer or restrain students when necessary.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely records to support students' Individual Educational Plans (IEP).
  • Working knowledge of sign language skills (SEE, PSE, and/or ASL) may be required when appropriate.
  • First aid or CPR certification may also be required.
  • Ability to work overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
