Structural Detailer / Drafting Team Lead
This role is ideal for an experienced structural steel detailer who is ready to lead a small drafting team while continuing to produce high-quality detailing work. You will focus on structural and miscellaneous metals projects, including stairs, railings, and balconies, using TEKLA Structures and AutoCAD to create accurate 2D and 3D models and drawings. The position requires a strong structural engineering knowledge base, the ability to impact projects immediately, and a passion for producing clear, constructible steel detailing that supports efficient fabrication and erection.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a drafting department of approximately three team members while actively detailing your own projects.
- Prepare complete and accurate submittal, fabrication, and erection drawings for structural and miscellaneous metals projects.
- Use TEKLA Structures and AutoCAD to create and manage 3D models and 2D drawings for stairs, railings, balconies, and other steel components.
- Coordinate and work in conjunction with engineers when required to resolve design and detailing issues.
- Set, manage, and meet project deadlines while handling multiple projects simultaneously.
- Read and interpret structural and architectural drawings, written specification sheets, and design conditions for new projects.
- Serve as a resource for conflict resolution in the 3D model, in the field, and in the shop, ensuring design clarity and constructability.
- Develop and insert design objects into the general contractor's 3D model as needed for project coordination.
- Generate 2D and 3D technical drawings for design approval (submittals), fabrication, and erection.
- Produce accurate bills of materials for assigned project designs in tandem with the detailing process.
- Coordinate closely with project management and production teams to resolve issues with production or construction and provide timely document adjustments.
- Standardize detailing practices and design details to streamline processes and improve efficiency across the drafting department.
- Apply knowledge of steel detailing requirements, procedures, and industry standards to ensure compliance and quality.
- Ensure drawings minimize fabrication complexity, reduce errors, and improve constructability in the shop and in the field.
- Support a culture of learning, continuous improvement, and personal development within the drafting team.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience working as a CAD designer within the structural or construction industry.
- At least 5 years of structural engineering-related experience working on railings, balconies, and stairs.
- Strong knowledge base of structural engineering principles relevant to steel detailing.
- Proficiency in TEKLA Structures and AutoCAD for 2D and 3D steel detailing.
- Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings and written specifications.
- Solid understanding of steel detailing requirements, procedures, and industry standards.
- Understanding of AWS welding procedures and their application to steel fabrication.
- Knowledge and understanding of building codes, AISC codes, and OSHA requirements related to structural steel and construction.
- Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, clear, and simplified steel detailing drawings that support efficient fabrication and constructability.
- Self-motivation with excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Willingness and ability to work in both office and shop floor or construction site environments with varying conditions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience creating and designing 3D models using TEKLA Structures or Revit.
- Experience detailing rails and stairs is preferred.
- Engineering license is not required but is preferred.
- Experience in steel fabrication environments and coordination with production and construction teams.
- Proven ability to standardize detailing practices and streamline processes within a drafting or detailing department.
- Strong collaboration skills for working with internal and external stakeholders.
- Positive attitude, strong desire for learning, and drive for success.
- Comfort with a structured hiring process, including a two-step interview with leadership and drafting team members.
Work Environment
This is an in-person role based in a combined shop and office environment, with work performed primarily on-site. You will work Monday through Friday on a full-time schedule, collaborating closely with project management, engineering, and production teams. The environment includes both office workstations equipped with TEKLA Structures and AutoCAD, and access to the shop floor and construction sites where you may observe fabrication and erection activities under varying conditions.
