A summer job opportunity in park and street maintenance. The Seasonal Public Works Laborer performs maintenance operations on the City's park properties and operates light equipment such as mowers and weed whips. This role offers experience in maintenance of grounds, parks, athletic facilities, streets, and trails, as well as management of natural resources. This is a 40 hours per week position with possible opportunities for additional hours.
Candidates must be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license and good driving record if 18 or older.
Note:
If you are in high school or college, this position will begin after the end of your school year.
Starting pay is $18.00 per hour. (The 2026 salary range for this position is $18-$24 per hour.) Seasonal and part-time employees working at least 80 hours in a year are eligible for Earned Safe and Sick Time (ESST). ESST accrues at one hour per 30 hours worked, up to 48 hours per year, begins at the start of employment, and may be used after 80 hours of work.

Position SummaryThe Seasonal Public Works Laborer performs maintenance operations on the City's park and street properties. Performs manual labor and may operate light equipment. Preference will be given to candidates who can work throughout the fall and on weekends when needed.
Essential Functions- Performs maintenance activities.
- Maintains beaches, grounds, parks, and athletic facilities using manual labor and grounds maintenance equipment (weed whips, power mowers, tractor mowers).
- Under supervision, conducts natural resource management practices (invasive species removal, spot herbicide treatments, seed collection and dispersal, habitat restoration, forest health management, hazardous tree assessment).
- Works on a crew to conduct crack filling, pothole patching, paint striping, sign installation, and right-of-way vegetation maintenance.
- Performs other essential job duties and maintains regular attendance.
- Follows all safety procedures and participates in safety training.
- Ability to understand and follow applicable OSHA standards and departmental safety practices and procedures.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods, and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse environmental conditions.
- Ability to operate small trucks (if over 18) and park maintenance equipment.
- Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools.
- Ability to work as part of a team or individually on assigned projects and complete duties productively and efficiently.
- Sixteen (16) years of age.
- High school graduate or equivalent or current high school student.
- If 18 years or older, must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Experience with grounds maintenance equipment.
- Experience with light maintenance equipment.
Includes standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing/pulling, repetitive movements, operating a vehicle, lifting, carrying, and exposure to temperature extremes. Refer to the detailed schedule for full requirements and safety considerations.
