Junior High School Language Arts Teacher

Position PurposeTeach and equip students to think critically, read deeply, communicate and write effectively. Encourage students to practice what they have learned and assist them in accurately listening, speaking, writing and reading.
Essential Functions- Instruct students in subject matter, utilizing various teaching methods, such as lecture and demonstration, and use audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop lesson plans and research different curriculum methods to implement that is coherent, purposeful and engaging.
- Plan individual and group activities using techniques such as dialogue, language games, literature, film, and other formal exercises.
- Prepare teaching outline for course of study, assign lessons, and correct homework assignments.
- Administer tests to evaluate students’ progress, record results, and issue reports to inform parents of progress.
- Maintain discipline in the classroom and in other school activities.
- Discuss students’ academic and behavior problems with parents and suggest remedial action.
- Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
- Keep attendance and grade records.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Appropriate certification as required by the Indiana Department of Education.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, excellent teaching skills, interpersonal relations skills, time management and organizational skills.
- Must be compassionate, patient, observant, detail-oriented, creative and think outside the box.
- Coach students individually or as a group; communicate with parents and other teachers about a student’s progress.
- Other qualifications as deemed desirable by the School Board.
- The employee is regularly required to sit or stand, and communicate effectively, including talking and hearing.
- The employee frequently uses hands to handle, operate, or manipulate objects, tools, or controls.
- The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms, and to exert up to ten (10) pounds of force.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position.
Length of year and salary to be determined by the School Board.
