Position Summary
The Set‑Up Technician plays a crucial role in the extrusion production process and reports directly to the Production Supervisor. They are responsible for ensuring the production equipment is set up correctly and according to product specifications, using problem‑solving skills to address machine errors and documentation skills to record reports. The technician also supports leadership for a team of operators, manages rotations and downtime, and helps maintain safe, efficient, and compliant operations.
Responsibilities- Set up extrusion machinery, including downstream equipment and tooling.
- Operate extrusion machinery daily, working with multiple materials and configurations without direct supervision.
- Clean equipment and tools used in the extrusion process.
- Complete detailed documentation related to machine set‑up and quality system requirements, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Identify and correct problems, adjusting machine settings and training others; document changes and monitor scrap reduction.
- Assist in resolving safety, health, or environmental issues and maintain compliance with good manufacturing practices.
- Cover for operators during shifts or breaks as needed.
- Produce quality parts, inspecting and approving profiles to meet all manufacturing requirements.
- Inspect material quality, alerting the Production Supervisor or appropriate personnel of material issues or failures immediately.
- Inspect machinery quality, reporting equipment failures to the Maintenance Department.
- Update set‑up sheets and documentation as required.
- Maintain knowledge of plants’ lines to set them up efficiently.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures of plastic extrusion.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast‑paced environment.
- Standard plant work environment; able to lift 25–75 lbs, stand for 10‑hour shifts, and perform bending, twisting, climbing, walking, and lifting.
- Ability to read a work order and use a tape measure within 1/16”.
- 3+ years of prior plastic extrusion experience.
- Experience with lean manufacturing.
- Caliper and micrometer proficiency.
