The purpose of this posting is to create a pool of qualified applicants to draw from as needed. Tutors provide academic support to Gateway students and guide them toward independence and self-direction in their coursework.
Position OverviewVeterinary Technician Tutors work in structured and supervised educational settings, including the Elkhorn Learning Success Center and/or other designated areas of the Elkhorn Campus.
Gateway has three tutor levels:
Peer Tutor, Tutor Specialist and Professional Tutor. This position works under the supervision of the Director of Student Support & Tutoring Services.
- Plan and facilitate tutoring sessions in a range of veterinary technician subjects using collaborative learning methods.
- Provide assistance with general and subject-specific study strategies.
- Provide assistance with Blackboard, Web Advisor, Gateway email and other student systems.
- Initiate student referrals to Gateway faculty or staff as appropriate.
- Participate in tutor training and other professional development activities.
- Participate in marketing and departmental activities promoting Tutoring Services, including Gateway Open House, New Student Orientation, Gateway Days and classroom visits.
- Provide excellent customer service to students and fellow Gateway employees.
- Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with FERPA regulations.
- Follow Gateway Technical College policies outlined in the Student and Employee Handbooks.
- Maintain consistent communication with supervisory staff and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Serve as a workshop facilitator, presenting topics related to overall study skills, such as test-taking strategies, note-taking, outlining and writing.
- Facilitate subject-specific discussion sessions.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a 3.33 GPA in the course or courses tutored. When appropriate, the semester GPA may be considered.
- Current student at an accredited postsecondary institution with at least six college credit hours completed.
- Recommendation required; the form will be provided during the interview process.
- Associate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a 3.33 GPA in the course or courses tutored; or
- Technical diploma plus at least 2,000 hours of recent, demonstrated and relevant occupational experience in the subject area tutored.
- Bachelor's degree or higher with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a 3.33 GPA in the course or courses tutored.
- Ability to plan and facilitate professional activities.
