Veterinary Technician Tutor

Help Gateway students strengthen their veterinary technician skills, build confidence and become independent, self-directed learners.

Compensation - $15.00-$22.00 per hour, based on tutor level

Help Students Succeed in Veterinary Technician Courses

The purpose of this posting is to create a pool of qualified applicants to draw from as needed. Tutors provide academic support to Gateway students and guide them toward independence and self-direction in their coursework.

Position Overview

Veterinary Technician Tutors work in structured and supervised educational settings, including the Elkhorn Learning Success Center and/or other designated areas of the Elkhorn Campus.

Gateway has three tutor levels:
Peer Tutor, Tutor Specialist and Professional Tutor. This position works under the supervision of the Director of Student Support & Tutoring Services.

What You Will DoAll Tutor Levels
  • Plan and facilitate tutoring sessions in a range of veterinary technician subjects using collaborative learning methods.
  • Provide assistance with general and subject-specific study strategies.
  • Provide assistance with Blackboard, Web Advisor, Gateway email and other student systems.
  • Initiate student referrals to Gateway faculty or staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in tutor training and other professional development activities.
  • Participate in marketing and departmental activities promoting Tutoring Services, including Gateway Open House, New Student Orientation, Gateway Days and classroom visits.
  • Provide excellent customer service to students and fellow Gateway employees.
  • Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with FERPA regulations.
  • Follow Gateway Technical College policies outlined in the Student and Employee Handbooks.
  • Maintain consistent communication with supervisory staff and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Tutor Specialist and Professional Tutor
  • Serve as a workshop facilitator, presenting topics related to overall study skills, such as test-taking strategies, note-taking, outlining and writing.
  • Facilitate subject-specific discussion sessions.
What You Need to Succeed Peer Tutor - $15.00 per hour
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a 3.33 GPA in the course or courses tutored. When appropriate, the semester GPA may be considered.
  • Current student at an accredited postsecondary institution with at least six college credit hours completed.
  • Recommendation required; the form will be provided during the interview process.
Tutor Specialist - $17.00 per hour
  • Associate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a 3.33 GPA in the course or courses tutored; or
  • Technical diploma plus at least 2,000 hours of recent, demonstrated and relevant occupational experience in the subject area tutored.
Professional Tutor - $22.00 per hour
  • Bachelor's degree or higher with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a 3.33 GPA in the course or courses tutored.
  • Ability to plan and facilitate professional activities.
Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent speaking, listening, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to relate well to students of various academic levels and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple students one-on-one or in small groups.
  • Knowledge of general and subject-specific study strategies and various approaches to learning.
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to students experiencing personal or academic challenges.
  • General computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and internet navigation.
