Lakeland Health Care Center is a (90) skilled bed nursing facility. The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Nursing Department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality resident care in compliance with regulatory standards. This role oversees clinical operations, develops and implements nursing programs, and fosters a culture of excellence to support residents in achieving their highest level of physical, mental, and psychosocial well‑being.

SUPERVISION

The Director of Nursing provides direct supervision and strategic direction for all nursing services at Lakeland Health Care Center (LHCC). This includes coordinating, evaluating, and monitoring departmental outcomes. The DON collaborates closely with the Nursing Home Administrator to allocate resources effectively and economically, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and applicable laws.

Clinical Leadership & Oversight: Assume ultimate accountability for the nursing care received by residents. Plan, organize, and direct the daily functions of the nursing department.

Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the facility is in compliance with all CMS, federal, state, and local regulations. Lead survey preparedness efforts and develop Plans of Correction (POC) for deficiencies.

Staff Management & Development: Oversee hiring, onboarding, scheduling, training, and performance management of nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs). Foster a positive, collaborative culture to reduce turnover.

Policy Development: Create, implement, and maintain nursing policies and procedures aligned with current best practices, facility philosophy, and regulatory requirements.

Clinical Quality Oversight: Monitor clinical trends, conduct chart audits, and lead QAPI initiatives to improve resident outcomes.

Survey Readiness: Participate in state and federal surveys. Develop and execute corrective action plans for identified deficiencies and monitor compliance.

Resident Care Programs: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design, implement, and evaluate resident care programs that meet individualized needs and ensure they are followed.

Performance Improvement: Identify and resolve issues within nursing care delivery systems in partnership with nursing leadership.

Financial Management: Manage the nursing department budget, including staffing, supply inventory, and equipment.

Incident & Abuse Investigations: Oversee investigations of alleged abuse, neglect, or misappropriation and report findings to the state as required.

Staff Development: Ensure ongoing education, training, and mentoring for nursing staff. Conduct annual performance evaluations and competency assessments.

Infection Control: Supervise the facility’s infection prevention program to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.

Staffing & Resource Management: Define and assign nursing responsibilities based on licensure, education, and experience. Develop departmental budgets and monitor expenditures.

Education Coordination: Assist in planning and delivering in‑service training, including federally mandated CNA and CMA education and dementia/behavioral health training.

Vendor Oversight: Monitor contracted clinical services (pharmacy, lab, therapy, etc.) for compliance and quality.

Committee Participation: Attend meetings and serve on committees per organizational procedures.

Academic Partnerships: Coordinate clinical experiences for nursing students with Gateway Technical College and other educational institutions.

Incident Reporting: Review facility incidents daily, identify unusual occurrences, and report promptly to the Nursing Home Administrator.

On‑Call Coverage: Maintain oversight of RN/LPN on‑call rotation to ensure 24/7 clinical support.
