Health and Human Services offer various different types of internships, both paid and unpaid.  Details on types of internships are available below:  

PUBLIC HEALTH

* Public Health Specialist Internships are designed for a broad range of degrees. Focused on health education and communications areas, these interns typically work on developing and/or improving health education curriculum. They may also work at community events, participate in preparedness activities, and experience community health assessment and improvement planning work. Job shadowing in all areas of public health is available as a part of this internship.

* Environmental Health Internship:
Typically a bachelor level internship for a student with a science interest. This opportunity focuses on exposing students to the full range of environmental health including water quality, childhood lead poisoning prevention, laboratory work, environmental sample collection, and vector monitoring. Internships may also include the opportunity to job shadow in other areas of environmental health.

* Public Health Nursing internships are designed for nurses pursuing a BSN/MSN, or enrolled in a BSN completion program. Nursing internships are based on program need and are designed to meet the requirements of the community health clinical rotation.

* Women, Infants, and Children Dietetic Internship-Community Rotation:
Supervised by an RD this internship provides clinical experience in a community WIC setting. Interns will experience nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, biometric assessment, and community education efforts. This internship is designed to meet the clinical requirements of a bachelors or higher program.

ADRC

* Aging and Disability Resource Center Dietetic Internship - Community Rotation:
Supervised by an RD, this internship provides the opportunity for the delivery of nutrition/health education and nutrition/health services for older adults. Intern will learn how to screen individuals for nutrition risk, provide nutrition counseling, document consumer interactions, and have exposure to the operations of a community based senior nutrition program.

* Aging and Disability Resource Center Social Work Internship - Seeking a bachelor degree level social work student. Opportunity for student to work with older adults and adults with disabilities learning how to provide information and assistance, options counseling and connection to resource and benefits. Students will have exposure to other service areas including: elder abuse investigation, senior nutrition programs, health promotion and prevention programs and Veteran Services.

CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

* Child Welfare Bachelor level Internships are designed for Social Work degrees. Focused on learning and participating in child welfare services to children and families within standards, ordinances, and policies set forth by Chapter 48. They may also work at community events, participate in treatment courts, and experience Access, Initial Assessment, Ongoing Services and Foster Care Services. Job shadowing in all areas of Child Welfare is available as a part of this internship.

* Child Welfare Master level Internships are designed for master of social work degrees. Focused on learning and participating in child welfare services to children and families within standards, ordinances, and policies set forth by Chapter 48. During the course of their internship, they will practice first in Initial Assessment and then move to Ongoing Services. They also will be able to experience Treatment Courts and Foster Care Services.

During the second half of their internship, they will be responsible for a Child Welfare case and implementing services. Research of policies and best practice data, may be assigned. Job shadowing in all areas of Child Welfare is available as a part of this internship.

* Youth Justice Bachelor level internships are designed for social work, criminal justice, sociology, and psychology degrees. Focus is on learning and participating in youth justice services to adolescents and families within standards, ordinances, and policies set forth by Wisconsin Chapter 938. Job shadowing in the area of Youth Justice is part of this internship.

VETERANS

* In collaboration with the ADRC, Children & Families, and Behavioral Health Divisions, the Veterans Service Office offers internships for Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Social Work candidates. Interns will learn about Federal and State Veterans Benefits navigation, counseling individuals on eligibility for programs, and how to interact with Veterans and their beneficiaries to determine individual needs and how available programs might address those needs.

BHU

* Behavioral Health Internships are designed for a broad range social service degrees. Focused on providing resources and support for those with a variety of mental health needs.  These interns typically work with consumers by assisting mental health professionals with teaching coping skills,…
